A different perspective on baby food

If anyone is interested in a different perspective you might enjoy reading this article.  My stepdaugher who is due in March shared this with me.

Re: A different perspective on baby food

  • lol.. I won't take that personally since I A don't talk about "freaking rice cereal" and B the article is about more than "freaking rice cereal".

  • Couldn't agree more about the juice.  There is just no purpose for it.  I don't think rice cereal is "really harmful" since millions of babies are just fine, but I also don't see it packing much of a nutritional punch.  I want to make sure that what I get in my LO's mouth is actually good for her, not just neutral.

  • I would rather feed my child rice cereal than raw grass fed beef or liver. No offense Wipz, thanks for giving us something to talk about!

  • This is an interesting article. I appreciate you sharing it with us.

I didn't do the rice cereal thing either because it didn't make much sense to me. We started with veggies and protein and then added fruits and are just starting to offer grains now.

I always appreciate a different perspective. I don't agree with everything in the article, but some of it definitely makes sense. :)

  • Yea, different perspective on baby food for sure. One that I did not follow and do not agree with. At all. Smile

  • Hmmm...it is interesting. I agree that fruit juice should be limited but I did use it when DS was constipated as opposed to a more drastic approach such as medicine.

We also didn't do rice cereal. We ground up regular oatmeal and used that (mixing in purees on occasion). Banana's were one of his first foods (along with avocado.

All in all it was not a bad article. I don't agree with the raw beef and liver though. I understand where the author was going but I held off on meats for a while because of DS's stomach issues. So I just don't think that path would work for us. Plus I despise liver...yuck Stick out tongue

  • I'm pretty sure that her 10 year-old, no matter how grossed out he claims to be, will be wolfing down Cheetos and Mountain Dew in a few years, despite his mother's best efforts. All those preservatives and high-fructose corn syrup - the horror!

I have a friend who is a dietician and has shared similar advice with us (except the raw liver), and on her son's birthday when she asked what he wanted her to make for dinner, given the option of his "favorite in the whole world," he asked her to make a Culver's butter burger with cheese fries.

  • I once heard something similar about rice cereal on NPR. It talked about the Great White Out (I can't link, so if someone wants to make https://www.drgreene.com/article/about-whiteout-movement clicky, thanks!).

The NPR show covered how a baby's first food are imprinted on the brain. And that plays a role in the type of food(s) you end of craving later in life. So basically, you want your kids to crave nutritionally dense foods so that's what you should be feeding them first. (Disclaimer: I am probably doing a horrible job summarizing what I remember from a long ago radio show. It was when J. was little.)

Anyway, I do agree rice cereal is unnecessary. And it doesn't have a lot going for it nutritionally. We haven't fed it to either child. We BLW.

  • It is an interesting topic, though that blogger maybe isn't the expert she implies she is, sounds like she's read a couple of books maybe? Anyway...
I think childhood obesity is a result of parents fostering unhealthy eating habits over the long term, probably because that is how they eat themselves and don't really know any better. We gave DS brown rice cereal as his first food, followed by sweet potato and then other fruits and veggies. The only meat he's had is turkey, which he loves! I haven't given him egg yet because I am concerned about allergies. I have made all his food from scratch and we eat a mostly whole foods diet. I highly doubt the first few foods he had are going to ruin him for life, since we will continue to eat a healthy diet as a family.
Food is such a cultural thing. I don't believe there is any 1 right way to feed babies.

Yes. I think about the only thing we can all agree on is no soda for babies. Smile  After that, is so, so cultural and individualized by family.

  • We only used it for about a week and then I remembered it had arsenic in it ..and LO preferred oatmeal so that was a no brainer for me.  It's also in some juices which I don't plan to give him anyway for other reasons.
