I just moved to this city not quite a year and a half ago. I have no doctor, no nurse practitioner, nothing, I am on waiting lists. I have called midwifes in my city and am getting no responses. I am six weeks tomorrow and really I should have an appointment at least scheduled and I don't even have a care provider. I don't really know how this works. Should I call around for OB/Gyn's as well? Do you see a midwife and an OB/Gyn? I know you don't need a midwife, but I like the idea of their services. I just don't know if I need to find both? Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, about exercise; I am a really active person and am fit. I've seen a lot of contradictory information. I play indoor soccer and some sites I see say not too play and some say only during the first tri. Wish I had a doctor to ask
Also, I have a ski trip planned in few weeks (booked before the two lines showed up) and same sort of information is out there about snowboarding. I am good and I figure if I stick to greens and blues I won't fall at least not hard.... I think I should be okay in the first tri since I am fit and I have an active lifestyle already and consider myself low risk (based on my research again if I had a care provider I could ask)....thoughts?
Re: Midwife, OB/Gyn and Exercise
I 100% wanted a midwife, so i didn't call any OBs, but you could always start care with an ob and then transfer to a midwife if you are able to find one. September is a big birth month (more births than any other month) and the ones in my area filled up fast. That said, from what i hear most mws don't have the first appt till 10-12 weeks, so you don't need to panic yet.
The advice i have heard is no snowboarding/downhill skiing, but maintaining existing exercise levels (within your comfort -- you should be able to carry a conversation, not be overheating and not feel week/hot/dizzy/experiencing pain, etc.). A major reason for these restrictions is the increased possibility of injury due to falls (hormones released in pregnancy cause ligaments and tendons to relax, which can lead to worse injuries).
Oh, and good luck!
This. With my last I started at an OB office and at 10 weeks transferred care to a MW. You want to be active though in looking for a MW because I know several who will only take on a handful of clients a month so if she fills up you may not be able to find a MW you click with.
I see a mid wife and she is at my OB's office. I would call an OB/GYN office and ask if they have any midwifes. In reality, it doesn't really matter who you see because you don't know who will be on call when you go into labor. With my second, I went into labor on a Saturday and midwifes don't work weekends, so a Dr I had never met delivered my son. Once I was in labor, I didn't care who delivered him, I just wanted him out! haha
Any activities you were doing before you got pregnant should be fine for you to continue doing. As long as you keep it pretty calm and not do anything crazy, you should be fine snowboarding. With my first, I went skiing and snow tubing. I would just listen to your gut!
