Unhappy Baby

DS has never been a laid-back baby, but this week he is just nearly impossible to please. He won't sit in the floor to play with toys, even if I am sitting right there with him. (This used to be a great past-time for him.) He is only happy in his jumperoo for a few minutes. He tolerates the high chair only if he has munchies on his tray. He does okay in his stroller some, and then he will randomly freak out with his separation anxiety scream. (We just switched to a forward-facing stroller, so I think that's part of that particular issue.) He screams bloody murder on his stomach now (but can roll both ways and flips himself onto his belly all the time). He's had a runny nose and occasional cough (no fever) since Friday night. I see no signs of teeth. His naps are short again. I just can't figure out how to make him happy. (And if one more person tells me we're in the "best stage ever!" I'm going to punch them in the mouth.) I so need a light at the end of this tunnel!

Re: Unhappy Baby

  • Do you have the Wonder Weeks book? They have a leap coming. LO is crankier than usual too.

  • Yes DD too. One minute she is happy and the next has a total melt down. And she is very very clingy too. I can't leave the room, or be out of her line of sight or she will get so upset. Even if someone else is holding her. I have been taking naps with her when I can and it seems to help her mood a bit getting a little more extra rest.

  • I forgot about Wonder Weeks. Ooh, it kind of helps to think that maybe this crankiness is just a precursor to a new development. Thanks! Also, I like the idea about trying to nap with him. I'm not sure how it will work b/c he just thinks it is playtime when we lay down on my bed. Maybe if I pull the curtains and get the fan going, he'll figure it out.

  • It could definitely just be a stage as they go through those often.  I would keep an eye on that cough and runny nose though.  This time of year they have them so often and they are fine, however, my son ended up having an ear infection without a fever or any other signs.  There were 2 days were he was really not himself and very unhappy.  I finally called the dr on the second day because he was acting so not like himself.  It ended up being an ear infection.  I had no other signs than his behavior.  Actually, there was one that she told me I didn't know about.  He was not nursing well but was eating solids from a spoon. She said sucking was hurting his ear and the spoon didn't bother him. Now I know to watch for that. So, it could be just a phase but just watch out! I was so surprised when Owen ended up having the ear infection.
