Baby Names

Please help with boy name list

DH and I are having a hard time coming up with a good list that we love.  We have a hard time with our last name because it's short and is a word (sounds like Cal) so lots of names don't quite go with it.  We have a few names have have made the list, but having a hard time finding a name we love.  We would like something masculine and unusual or uncommon, but not made up.  I know these names are not for everyone, but the ones that come up the most are:

Dominic - I think it's OK, kind of too mainstream for us.

Phoenix - It's a bit too out there, and we know a little boy named Phoenix, but it's up our alley in type.

Othello/Apollo/Odin - We like these.  DH not too hot on Othello.  I heard the neighbor calling a dog the other day Apollo, so I think that's out and I'm not sure about Odin, which DH recommended.

Dashiell - Probably the most likely choice from this list, but neither of us are in love with it, yet.

Peregrine/Pellegrin - another very likely choice.  DH and I like Peregrine a lot, but we started calling LO "Peri" for parasite early on and even joked with family about it, so not sure if that ruins it.  I actually don't like the nn Perry either.  We found Pellegrin the other day and sites say it's Hungarian origin and a form of Peregrine, but I couldn't find it on Behind the Name.  DH is Hungarian, so that would be a plus if it were real.

Quinn - too girly?

Eli - DH keeps bringing this up, but seems too popular.

Thanks for any help and suggestions on what to add!  There are others on the list, but this is a representation.

Re: Please help with boy name list

  • Dominic - Love. It is getting popular, though.

Phoenix - Out there, but I do like it. I know a little boy named Phoenix (but his parents spelled it Fenix).

    Othello/Apollo/Odin - No.

Dashiell - It's not my favorite, but it has a place in my heart because one of my friends in high school was named Dash (just Dash, though, not Dashiell). I always thought it was cool, and would be a good NN.

Peregrine/Pellegrin - No. Perry is just okay as a NN.

Quinn - Unfortunately, you'll see it used more for girls these days. Personally, I think it's all boy.

Eli - I also love this name, but yes, it is becoming more popular.

  • My favorite is Eli, but if that's too popular for you, my second choice would be Dominic, followed by Phoenix. I agree that Quinn is becoming more popular for girls, though I do like it. What about Quentin?

I dislike Othello, Apollo, Odin, Dashiell, Peregrine and Pellegrin.

  • My favorites from your list are Quinn and Eli
  • Dominic - It's okay.

    Phoenix - No

Othello/Apollo/Odin - Apollo is okay, but sounds African American to me.

    Dashiell - not bad.

    Peregrine/Pellegrin - No

Quinn - Unfortunately, you'll see it used more for girls these days. Personally, I think it's all boy.

    Eli - YES!

  • I really like Dashiell and Peregrine. Interesting and unusual, but Dash and Perry/Peri are very accessible nicknames.

Overall I think your list is really interesting [goodinteresting!]. The only one I give a no to is Othello. Not a positive association.
Edit, just saw you don't like Perry. I think Peregrine is likely to be shortened so if you really dislike Perry I would come up with an acceptable alternate nn.

  • Dominic - I'm twenty two, I can't recall actually ever meeting a Dominic!

And I rather like the NN 'Dom'.

Phoenix - It is a bit much if you aren't fully committed.

Othello/Apollo/Odin - NMS, but I applaud out of the box thinking.

Dashiell - I used to have a Dashiell as a neighbor and we called him Dash. I like the name.

Peregrine/Pellegrin - Never heard of it!

Quinn - I prefer it as a girl's name, but you if you feel it fits, a slightly more masculine middle name could make it work.

Eli - You could go with something like Elijah, Elliot, Elias, Elian, or Aurelian, the last one being a stretch.

  • Dashiell! I love it! I'm also a bibliophile so for me it brings to mind mid-century masculinity. (Dashiell Hammett wrote The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man, among others) That's the name that gets my vote!
