Need a gut check - Short-term disability

I'm 29 weeks pregnant with twins and have been having anywhere between 7-10 small contractions an hour the past several days. My doctor is aware of these. I know I need to start taking it easy and I know my doctor will be pulling me from work soon anyway, so is it asking too much for his office to sign off on my short-term disability to start next week?

I sent the paperwork to them yesterday and the nurse filled it out, but with a "cease work" date of mid-April, my real due date, even though they know I will likely deliver in March.

I have to go back to the hospital tonight for an iron infusion at which time they'll monitor the kids and my contractions again, and I'm sure my doctor will be contacted because I'll probably have more than 5 an hour again. With that said, should I, or the nurse, ask him if he can sign off on my short-term to start next week and to redo the paperwork? Am I asking too much? Am I jumping the gun by leaving work at this point? Thanks!

  • I would say listen to your body and do what you feel you need to do. Everyone is different; some women can work all the way up to their due dates, but others can't. I had to go off work way earlier than I thought due to lots of contractions....ended up on modified bedrest at 30 weeks anyway and delivered two healthy boys at 35w4d....I'm sure it would have been much earlier if I had ignored my body's signals and kept working. Things can change so quickly w/ a multiples pregnancy and contractions (even if they are "just BH") should be taken seriously. GL!

This.  I asked to leave at 36 weeks. I just couldn't take it anymore because I was exhausted, hurting, and just feeling plan done.  My STD pay dropped to 70% after week 6 which was fine with me but if it isn't ok with you then I would check.

  • It was always in my doc's plan to write me off at 30 weeks. Its her standard care for twins. I have short term disability at 100% from my employer so it was a no brainer for me. I highly attribute making it to 37w6d because of it.  It was so much easier to handle the pregnancy once I wasn't slugging it to work everyday.  Trust your gut.  Good luck.

  • With that many contractions that early, I'd want to be out of work. But like the others said, go with your gut.

  • My doc rec 28 weeks to go out, so I worked from home the past 3 weeks and fri will be my last day at 31 weeks. I get 100% for 10 weeks and 70% from delivery up to 8 weeks. I just want these turkeys to cook as long as possible!

  • I don't think you're asking too much. I started having a lot of contractions around 30 weeks and finally asked my doctor to write me out of work at 31 weeks which he had no problem doing. As someone said on a different post, you don't get any do-overs so you have to do the best for you and your babies right now. Good luck to you!

  • i was written out at 29 weeks, without any contractions.  i made it to 37 and while i dont know if taking it easy helped or not, im sure it cant hurt.

as someone else said, you only get one chance at this, and you dont want to wonder if you could have done something differently.

  • Those of you who started short term disability 4-6 weeks before your babies were born, how much time did you take after?  My company only guarantees my job for the 12 weeks FMLA requires.  I am afraid if I am signed off too far before they are born, then I will only be able to spend a few weeks with them when we come home!
