Mattresses

Mobile: Mattresses

I swear, this isn't a "Which do you prefer?" post, haha.

I see people talking about the different kinds of mattresses, specifically organic ones, and I wonder: is this really necessary?

I plan on having a waterproof cover, a sheet, another waterproof cover, and another sheet on the baby's mattress, then possibly a sheet saver over it. (By putting two sets on, if there is a mess, I can just take the top set off and not have to completely remake the bed in, say, the middle of the night when I'm half asleep.)

So, what is really the point in an organic mattress? Baby isn't going to be in direct contact with it. I can understand coil vs foam for comfort reasons, but why organic?

Re: Mattresses

  • I think organic mattresses are supposed to be made without all those extra chemicals that can seep out of the mattress and indirectly or directly (not sure) cause SIDS. That's what I have read, but I'm a FTM so I am in the same boat!

  • The organic ones don't emit gasses that the non-organic ones do.  Considering how much time she spends on it, it was worth the upgrade for me.

I agree with your sheet layering system to an extent, you just don't want to make it too plush or there's a suffocation risk.  A waterproof mattress pad, sheet, and sheet saver should do the trick.  Then if there's a blow-out or puke fest, you can just pull off & replace the sheet saver.  I just used a thin cheesecloth-type cloth diaper under her head as my 'sheet saver' when DD hit her reflux stage.  I could put a clean one down for every nap as needed, and just change the sheets once or twice a week.

  • Oh yeah, the gasses... I guess my question would be, if there's sheets on the bed (possibly multiple ones), wouldn't that suppress the gases?

Also, should I let my mattress "air out" for now, until the baby gets here?

And, where's the science on these "gasses"?

  • I bought an organic mattress that's waterproof.  The first couple of times I used the waterproof mattress covers I accidentally melted them in the dryer.  Now I just put the sheets straight on the mattress.  So much less to wash!  I just change the sheets.  I would recommend the waterproof mattress and using significantly fewer layers of laundry than what you described.

  • Well actually, my in laws bought our mattress already, and it seems to just be a plain ol' mattress. I'm pretty sure it's not waterproof. And I don't want to buy another mattress when we have a brand new one already, so I'll probably still get the waterproof covers. :-/

They bought our crib, and when they brought it to us, they brought a mattress too. It wasn't the one we'd registered for, but I figured it would work the same, lol.

  • I won't comment on organic vs. non-organic, but seriously, how thin is a sheet? and if you're not using those fully padded waterproof pads (just a waterproof cover), it's not gonna be too plush that it becomes a risk. My mom gave me the layering tip, too, and I may try it. Honestly, after changing pee sheets every other night during FI's DD's last visit with us, I would rather just take a sheet/cover off, then put the baby back down, than have to change a crib sheet in the middle of the night. You don't realize what a hassle it is (at 2 a.m.) until you've done it 4 times a week for 3 weeks. And this LO isn't going away after 3 weeks like FI's DD.

Sheets and covers wouldn't be enough to contain gasses.

Here's a pretty good summary regarding the gas stuff:

My thoughts are that if I'm gonna spend nine months being careful about chemicals, why would I put a growing baby on a mattress full of chemicals? My husband and I sleep on an organic mattress and I wouldn't want anything less for my child.
