I looked into it and concluded that the benefits don't outweigh the cost of encapsulations/grossness of eating my own placenta. It seems like just another thing for new moms to pay for but that's just my opinion.
Consuming the placenta is more of a Chinese Medicine thing. I am a recent graduate of acupuncture/chinese medicine and several women at my school consumed the placenta. It is supposed to help with PPD and give you more energy. I know several women who swear by it. Not sure you will find any "scientific" or peer reviewed studies on it, as it is not that popular in the "western medical world." Although I haven't looked that deeply into. I know it was talked about briefly in some of my text books.

I am however going to be 100% doing the encapsulation. Many people close to me have done this and swear by it. I am mostly looking for the PPD benefits.
