Re: ~*~*~mdiblasi~*~*~

  • I just saw this - sorry for the delay!

He is a 75 year old Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii). They are an endangered species and protected by Federal and State law. There is a local rescue group that takes them in when they wander into the roads, etc. and once they are rescued, by law they cannot be released back out into the wild because they have such a low survival rate at that point. They can be "adopted" to homes to live out the rest of their lives. He is friendly and recognizes me when I feed him, but we try to keep his handling to a minimum since he is truly a wild animal. He also hibernates for the winter so we only see him for half the year. His name is Tom and I think he is pretty darn cool :)

  • That is so awesome! I used to work at a wildlife rescue and rehab, but almost all of our animals were released back into the wild. Except an opossum that got too human friendly and had to go to a zoo. Tom is very adorable!

  • What a cool job! I would love to do that. I really love animals, big and small, wild and domestic. I just love them. Thanks for asking about him :)
