Illinois Babies

Anyone have or know someone who had a home birth in Chicago?

This is my 3rd pregnancy. After delivering my two sons in hospitals (two different hospitals), I dream of a home birth or a birthing center with a midwife. I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find anything. I've found certified midwife groups. In fact I had my 2nd son with the midwife group at Swedish Covenant. While they were great, I still had to deliver at the hospital and be put thru the hospital machine, if you know what I mean. This is definitely going to be my last pregnancy. So I'd really like to NOT be hooked up to an IV machine, and NOT be put on Pitocin. I would LOVE to have a water birth. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • I know it's not really what you are looking for but I do know that Northwestern does offer birthing tubs, but only on a first come first serve basis. It may be an option though if you can't find anything else. I would imagine though that with Chicago being as large as it is, there has to be a home birth/water birth option somewhere. Good luck!

ETA: Perhaps this is why you are unable to locate any birthing centers? https://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local/illinois&id=8965420

  • I'm in the north suburbs but I did have a home water birth. My midwife is a CPM and located in Evanston. Private message me if you would like her details!

  • Unfortunately there are no birthing centers in Illinois.  The first one just got approval to be built in Berwyn, but I don't think there is a timeline for when it will be open.  So at the moment it is either hospital or homebirth.

I would try contacting doulas as well as they can probably direct you to midwives that do home births.

  • As a doula I know TONS of moms who have had their babies at home. Hillary Kasier at Gentle Birth Care is the most popular home birth practice in the area. She fills up very fast though so get a consult ASAP https://www.gentlebirthcare.com/Services.html The other options are Debbie Boucher, Sarah Simmons and Christina Oser.

Home birth is really an AMAZING option and can't even be compared to the hospital birth experience as they are apples and oranges. One isn't better than another, it is more which fruit do you like better.
