Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Flu--should I worry

So my sitter called off today (actually last night) saying she has the flu. I don't know her symptoms, but all the babies she sits for (including DS) have been sick over the past week. So I don't know if she is just sick or if she has the actual flu (the one all over the news).

Anyway DS is finally on the mend after having a cold, teething and getting an ear infection from the cold. He has been at the sitter all last week and Mon and Tue this week. I was also told yesterday when I picked up DS that the sitters grandson has confirmed Rosela (which DS might have come in contact with.

Should I be worried that DS might get the flu if that is what my sitter actually has? DS has had both doses of the flu shot.

Thanks,

 A worried Mama

Re: Flu--should I worry

  • My husband and I both getting over the flu right now and our daughter is as healthy as ever! We have been supplementing her with vitamins and we have upped her breast milk intake. We have also been washing our hands like crazy! Just do your best to minimize any further exposure, keep your hands washed, and make sure your LO is getting as many vitamins and much breast milk as possible!

  • If your child had the vax for the flu, you might be ok. DH had the actual flu. He went to the dr and had the test. DS had only had the 1st flu dose and I had the vax in November and neither of us picked up the flu from DH. It was over the holidays so we were all 3 together 24 hrs a day for 4 days straight and then we were stuck in the house with a sick DH due to the snow.

  • My (breastfed) LO had both doses of the flu shot and still got the flu (confirmed with nasal swab). Tamiflu took care of him though. Oddly enough, DH and I did not catch it (we also both had the flu shot).

We've been through Roseola, fortunately it's not too bad. LO had no symptoms except for a scary high fever, but he was happy and bouncy otherwise. Flu made LO very whiny and clingy (which is why I took him to the doctor early enough that he was able to take tamiflu).

Good luck, I hope your LO doesn't get the flu, but if they do and you take them to the doctor in the first 24 hours of symptoms and your doctor approves tamiflu, it did make the flu go by very quickly for us and while LO was sick, he didn't seem horribly sick.

  • One thing I have learned recently is that the stomach flu (the one all over the news, the norovirus) is NOT influenza, so the shot doesn't do anything to protect

DD (had the flu shot) has had 2 bouts of stomach flu, and yes, it totally sucks and is awful to watch, but as long as you are smart and keep them hydrated, they come out of it okay.

  • We typically don't transmit things between baby and mom/dad unless there's a direct transfer. Like 2 days ago when DD sneezed in my face while I was changing her diaper. She has never caught anything from us, as we wash hands and move away if we have to cough or sneeze. We do not get the flu in our house, so I can't speak to that, just to colds. I suggest you read up on the symptoms of cold, flu and stomach flu, so you are aware of the differences, and when a baby needs to go to the doc or just rest.
