BFing 2nd time around?

Hi, there!  This will be my 2nd baby, so I was wondering if those mom's of 2 or more could share their experience BFing the 2nd time around?

Is it as painful starting out?  I didn't have a horrible experience, but it was pretty uncomfortable the first couple of weeks, especially the let down!  It took a while for us to get it totally down pat.

My son was about 9 months when I stopped nursing him, so when this LO comes around it will have been almost exactly 2 years since I last nursed...

Re: BFing 2nd time around?

  • The cramping of the ute hurts more while bfing #2. I only made it to 13w of nursing and then a year of pumping with a mixture of formula added at 7m.

  • With DD I found it to be a lot easier in that you know what you are doing at least somewhat. My main discomfort was the uterian cramping. I didn't have that with DS so I wasn't prepared for that really. That was pretty bad for the first few weeks but got better (an disappered) after that. My supply was even larger with DD which was a bit of a problem but i worked with a lactation consultant and was able to take care of that after a few months.

  • I only breastfed my DD for about 2 months, bc after a month she wasnt gaining weight and i had to start supplementing and i lost all my milk. Breastfeeding my son hurt alot. He was
a big eater. He would breastfeed for about an hour to an hour in a half every 2 hours. I felt like a human milking machine. And i had to pump almost every hour bc my boobs were filling up so fast. Good luck to you. Its different for everyone.
  • I don't have an answer, just saying thank you for asking this question.  I had never thought about if it would be different the second time around, and the responses about uterine cramping were very helpful.  It wasn't something I experienced with my first, but now I'm at least aware of it before the second. I nursed my son for 13 months and I LOVED the experience.  I'm very much looking forward to BF'ing with baby number 2 as well :)

  • Well I haven't stopped and started, but I've nursed for 5 1/2 years straight now. Knowing what to do the 2nd time around gives you the advantage. You arent as intimidated and you know what its supposed to look and feel like, so you can help baby more. Your boobs have been through this before, so they seem more desensitized already. I overlapped all my kids, so I'm not sure if that goes back to normal (does anything? Lol). The cramping seemed worse with each child for some reason. I nursed my first for 26mo, my 2nd for 31mo (until he died, cancer), and I'm still nursing my 23mo. Guess we will see if he decides to stop before this one is born. He's the oldest to get a sibling, so who knows.

My biggest advice, don't give up! It hurt like crazy the first 6 weeks the first time and I didn't think I'd be able to continue, each day I thought would be my last, but I kept saying 1 more day, and almost 6 years later I'm glad I kept going, because I'm sure if I'd try again after all that if we'd have given up.  He had an awful latch issue and my 2nd nursed like a champ, so that was a nice break for me. :)
