Highlights?

My hair is a dirty blonde color in the winter.  It gets pretty blonde in the summertime.  I used to get blonde highlights all the time but have since went more natural due to living in the city and the cost of highlights.  It's looking really blah and I'd like to get some hairline highlights before my baby shower this weekend.  Is this safe?  How many of you continue to get your hair highlighted during pregnancy?  I made an appointment but now I'm second guessing myself.

  • If you're going to a salon I can assure you'll be in a well ventilated area which is all you need to be concerned about. I've gotten my hair highlighted at 7,16,20 30 weeks pregnant. Highlights are actually better than color because it doesn't touch your scalp. You're fine.

  • I've gotten them a couple of times while pg and my ob okayed it. She did caution me that sometimes the color acts weird on the hair or fades easier but I haven't had a problem and I plan on making another trip into the salon in another 34 weeks.
  • I've gotten highlights a couple times so far, in fact.. Going next week!

I do wait until my second trimester but I'm pretty sure it's considered more safe because the dye doesn't set in your scalp.

  • I would book the appointment.

  • I got highlights with DD and I've gotten them with this pregnancy too. It's easier on you than actually dying your hair because as PP said, it doesn't really touch or settle in to your scalp. With that being said, I know quite a few people who have dyed their hair while pregnant because their doctors say it's an "overrated worry" and it's perfectly fine.

  • I have highlighted mine once already and I am doing it again before my shower next month.  You should be fine.
  • I hope this makes you feel better....

Prior to my new job, I did hair in a salon for over 6 years. I asked my doctor about this all when I was pregnant with DS. He explained there is no firm evidence that any type of hair color/dye has negative effects on babies. I colored my hair throughout my whole pregnancy and was around the smell and chemicals as well, with NO problems.

I am actually scheduled to get highlights a few weeks before my due date too. Spring is coming and I want to feel my best when baby girl arrives. I see no problem in it. Not to mention, with highlights, the color doesn't actually touch your scalp, so I wouldn't worry. Hope this helps!

  • It is totally safe to get highlights while you are pregnant.  I asked my Dr. that when I first found out.  My hairdresser also reassured me that it was safe and he even highlighted his wifes hair when she was pregnant.  The chemicals do not touch your scalp if you are doing foils.

  • I have gotten a lot of criticism over the things that I will not do during pregnancy: no lunchmeat, soft serve ice cream, not a drop of alcohol, etc.  I still get my highlights.  I don't want my daughter to be embarrassed some day over my shabby looking hair in her baby pictures.  My hairdresser is also a nurse.  She said that the color that she used is marketed as safe during pregnancy.

  • I have gone throughout my entire pregnancy to get highlights. My OB said highlights are fine because the dye does not touch your scalp.
