What recipe/brand did you use? I've used it for a few things, and liked it... but for most things, like cleaning the bathroom, I like vinegar and baking soda best.
I've got two handsoaps that are castile that I like. And DD's shampoo/body wash is castile (earth mama angel baby) the soaps come in a pump so that they are foamy. It cost 14$ for the shampoo... but I've only bought one bottle since DD's been born and it's still got some left. I'll need to order another bottle soon. I use it probably every second day. Other days I use plain water. It's rated 0 on EWG's cosmetic database (no chemicals, which I like for DD).
I'm still not happy with my dish soap... I tried Dr. Bronner's liquid for that, but I have to rinse with vinegar to get rid of the film... and it doesn't bubble as much as I'd like it to. I know that bubbles don't mean clean... and that the water gets icky regardless of whether there are bubbles on top or not. I don't like looking at it. I haven't found one that is rated low on the database that works as well as I'd like, that can be bought easily here.
I use Dr. Bronner's bar soap with a bath sponge for the shower and I like that. It's also rated 0 for no chemicals, and lasts a long time.
I haven't tried it for laundry... right now I'm using Tiny Bubbles, which I use with my diapers.
Other than using straight or diluted vinegar and baking soda, for the most part I've been lazy with making my own detergents... I did try making some out of soap nuts, but it doesn't last long without being refrigerated, and I didn't want to put it in the fridge and have someone mistake it for juice or something...
I think making your own cleaners can be done pretty cheaply. For me though the main reason is limiting the chemicals that DD is exposed to especially while she's so young... since everything is licked, put in the mouth...
ETA: I promise I wasn't this weird before I had her! Honestly I got freaked out when I read an article about what's in some Johnson's products and that made me look at everything more closely.
tjkdhb I thought you would know about it My friend started using it because her Asama was really bugging her and she was raving about it so I thought I'd try it out. They stopped making my fav organic brand of ap cleaner so I've been looking for something new. I use vinegar for a lot but dh doesn't like the smell I liked that her ap cleaner didn't smell. She also makes her own cleaning wipes by soaking paper towels in one cup hot water one table spoon castile.
I bought a travel size bottle of Dr. Bronner's magic soap peppermint scent and I'm excited to start playing with it. I did make a spray bottle of 1/4 vinegar, a squirt of Castile, and a dash of washing soda the rest of the bottle I filled with hot water and shook. It did a great job on my kitchen last night.
There's all sorts of other recipes on a blog I found I might try, the one very simple one was get a foaming hand soap container use a squirt of castile fill with hot water and you have instant hand soap! I like that idea. Oh yeah and there's a recipe for an insecticidal soap which I love the idea of!
I like to use natural and organic when it works and isn't expensive
I think I'm gonna have to get on the washing soda train....I've only used baking soda so far...Gonna try the Dr. Bronner's w/ foaming pump when the pumps I have are empty...
I use washing soda in my laundry detergent I make so I already had it in the house I do love my laundry detergent
My laundry detergent is
4lbs baking soda
4 lbs washing soda
3 lbs oxy clean
4 lbs borax
4 bars fels naphtha soap grated
Use a half to two table spoons per load I use one or less but other people use more
But you can skip the borax or sub bar Castile for fels naphtha soap, this was just the first recipe a cousin gave me that is he machine safe so I tried it and I love it. It cost about 18 and I'm thinking will last me about 9 months at 6 to 10 loads a week.

It's a natural all purpose type soap. Usually made out of vegetable based ingredients.

What do you use in your laundry detergent?
I'd love to try it, but most have borax in it and I used borax to clean the carpet this summer and DD had a really bad reaction.

You can get scented lavender or spearmint.
