Now that DD is a rolling machine, I'm curious: how do babies find the sitting position on their own? Rolling seems natural, but pulling herself up to sit, I guess I just can't see how this will occur to her. We hold her in our laps and I'll occasionally lift her up into a sitting position, but we don't put her in a Bumbo or an exersaucer or anything like that (and we don't plan to, we try to keep it light on the baby gear).
So, there's my dumb parenting question for the day. How did your LOs learn to sit up?

ETA: I know you like to keep it light on baby gear but I highly recommend the Vtech sit to stand walker to help them learn to sit. We won't be using it as a walker, but having a toy with lots of buttons that they have to reach for helped my boys learn some stability while sitting.
He'd been sitting if I put him that way for almost four months before he crawled...pretty late crawler over here, he preferred to roll to get around.

~All AL'ers welcome~
Do you have a boppy pillow? We used that to help support M, just sit him in the middle of it.
...DS still isn't sitting up on his own but I will echo PPs responses that I think they have to be crawling first. Or at least in that position of being on hands and knees. I think it would be really hard for them to go from flat on back/stomach into a sit position. Probably why DS still isn't doing it yet; he still just belly crawls.
So not a dumb question at all!

I'm sorry, I wasn't being very clear. I meant feeding solids, since we're hoping to skip spoon feeding and just go straight to solids she can have safely (steamed veggies, etc.).
Thanks so much for all of your help, Missa... also, I love seeing posts from you and admiring your little guy's R2 helmet
Are you asking about sitting unassisted or actually getting themselves to a seated position? Those are different things and usually happen separately. DD started sitting unassisted around 6m, we would sit her up and she would stay. Before that we would prop her up in the corner of the couch or in the Boppy and then as she started getting stronger and not leaning on them as much for support we would practice sitting her up after tummy time and it gradually became longer and longer until she could do it on her own indefinitely. She didn't learn how to get herself into a seated position until after she learned to crawl at 10m and then she'd get on all fours and back up into a seated position.
We started feeding her solids (cereal) at 4m in a high chair that reclined back when we started her on non-pureed solids at 6m she was able to use it without the recline.
I try to stay chill... sometimes I succeed. Mostly I want to let DD go at her own pace, and my question mostly comes from wanting to be sure she'll be safe to start solids at 6 months. She's not sitting up unassisted at all at this point, so, our laps may just end up covered in food
