Moving to NJ - Suburbs

H and I live in Hoboken and we are looking to move to the suburbs...We just do not know towns or where to consider. I grew up in Scotland, H is from LA. We would like to be on a train line and with in 40- 60 minutes.  I am pregnant with twins and we are kind of done with city living. Thoughts?

Re: Moving to NJ - Suburbs

  • how about the Nutley area?  Glen Ridge is very nice and there is a train line right in town.  They also have a jitney that takes you up and down the main road there (Ridgewood Ave) to the train.  The only downfall is it is very expensive to buy in Glen Ridge.  Taxes start out at about $12,000.  And thats probably for the smallest house in town.  Essex County is a good bet for you because it is close to public transportation.  I don't know if you want to buy or rent but all of Essex County is a bit high n taxes. We bit the bullet and bought in Essex County just because of convenience.

  • I agree with Nikki. I live on the Glen Ridge border in Bloomfield. Direct line to NYC. Nutley has a great school district, so does Montclair. Good luck with your house search.
  • What about Morris County? We recently moved to Whippany. Love the area, taxes aren't bad, public transportation not all that far away.
  • H and I are going to do open houses this weekend and next in Morris, Essex and Bergen Co.... H said something about a town in Morris called Chatham..Madison, in Essex Montclair, and varona? Cedar Grove?  Bergen, Ridgewood. do not know any of these places.

  • Madison is an adorable town.  It had a great walkable downtown with restaurants and stores etc.  And, a Whole Foods :)
  • they are all very nice towns.  the only thing that makes me nervous about Montclair is you can have a mansion right next door to a dump.  But Montclair has some beautiful areas!!

  • We just moved to Mountainside NJ from Jersey City ( summit ) . Is only 45 m from the NYC, great school systems, plenty of shopping and activities for the little ones. There is a bus and train that takes you to NYC.  Check it out

    Good luck

  • I grew up in Edgewater in Bergen County and loved it. My parents still live there, and it's super close to the city. There are many small towns around in the area with bus lines that go right to the port authority. I guess it all depends on your budget, too.

  • I recommend Westfield- it's the most idealist town with an awesome downtown!
  • Definitely Westfield, Summit, and Madison for central Jersey.

Ridgewood, Ho Ho Kus, Wyckoff, Midland Park, Glen Rock, and Allendale are great areas of Bergen County.

  • Westfield is my ideal NJ town. I'm obsessed with the downtown and cute parks.
For North Jersey: Glen Rock, Ho Ho Kus, Ramsey

  • Morris County has the best taxes.  Close to public transportation. 40 min outside of NYC.

Those are all great areas with great schools but if you're on the more price-cosncious side you're going to find out quickly you're priced out of those areas.  Houses that are reasonably sized (relative, I know) start in the early $500K.  If your budget is huge check out Millburn or Short Hills.  If you're more moderate and would consider being in area with a mixed population try Maplewood, South Orange or West Orange.  Livingston falls somewhere in between with "okay" taxes, very good schools (#24 in state) but you would have to drive to your local train station which would most likely be in South Orange.  Have you considered Springfield?
