Birthing class vs DVD

Hi ladies,

Just wanted some feed back. I was looking at birthing classes last night. I am going to take breastfeeding and baby basics.  But the all day birthing/breathing class is $90. A lady at work said her daughter got DVDs from amazon for $20-30 and felt they prepared her for delivery very well. I've heard other people say they felt the class was a waste. I will definitely pay if its beneficial but just thought I'd explore options.

Anyone have any feedback on this? Did you watch DVDs, or would you recommend a class? If you did do DVDs any good ones you recommend?

Re: Birthing class vs DVD

  • I have this same question. I really don't want to pay for birthing class because that alone is 75 plus another 75 for any other class. I didn't even know there were birthing DVDs on amazon. Good to know.

  • Just noticed there was another birthing class post today, so I apologize.  I usually check those things.... Any DVD recommendations would still be appreciated if you have them. :)

  • Check your insurance, many of them cover the birthing classes at least partially.  I'm taking a Bradley class and have not seen any DVDs.

  • We decided to go ahead and take them I have heard all good things about them so we thought it can't hurt for us to go, and I didn't feel 78 was much for 4 classes and a breast feeding class.

  • I had a friend tell me that she got more from the DVDs than the birthing class.  However, she said that if she were to do it over, she'd probably still have taken the birthing class.

I'm taking a one day class ($80) at the hospital where I'll deliver.  I'm not familiar with that hospital, so I figure it would be a good way to get an idea of the sort of things that I might expect from the hospital team once I'm there for delivery.

Plus, I think it will force my husband to be a little more comfortable and open minded about how to mentally support me during labor if he's forced to actually walk through some steps with me beforehand :)
