Baby Names

Kian?

I have always liked the name Kian, pronounced Kee-yuhn. And now that I am pregnant with a baby boy I would like to name him Kian. My husband seems to disagree though, he wants to name him Andrew. Though I'm not to fond of this name I want to make him happy, should I change the name Kian to Andrew or should he be Kian Andrew? Other names on our list are Alexander, Conrad, Samuel and Levi.

Re: Kian?

  • I do not like Kian at all, sorry.  Andrew is a great name though as are Alexander and Conrad.  Could you maybe use Kian as a mn (if you really love it)?

  • I think you should use a name that you both like, meaning don't use Kian or Andrew since neither one of you is too fond of the other's choice. I really like Alexander, Samuel, and Levi from your list.

  • There were 2 guys in my grade in hs class and they were both awesome. So I associate the name to awesomeness. :) I might not use it but I do associate it to good people.

  • I'd never heard the name Kian before your post and I actually quite like it.  I also like Kian Andrew for FM and MN.
  • Kian is beautiful. Keyon would be how i'd spell it to get the pronounciation you like.

  • I'm not a fan of the name.  At first, I thought the title of this post was spelled K-L-A-N, as in the KKK, because it's hard to tell Is and Ls apart when typed.  Not cool for him in an electronic age.  What about Keane or Keenan?  I like Andrew and any of the names on your mutual list.

I agree. If he doesn't like Kian and you don't like Andrew, throw them both out and concentrate on a mutual decision.

  • I've never heard Kian before, and I actually really like it! That said, I agree that if your husband doesnt really like it, and you aren't really happy with Andrew, you should keep brainstorming to find one you both love. :)

  • Kian is also Persian name meaning king and is definitely spelled correctly with a "k".

Disagree that Keyon would be the way to spell it. If I saw that, I would say Kee-on. And I know a kid with that name. When I read "Kian," in my head, I pronounced it the right way. It isn't really my style but it's okay I guess. Definitely think you should both be happy with your choice, you wouldn't want one of you to be ok and the other one not! Andrew Kian would be cute- Andrew is a classic name that ages better, IMO, and you could still call him Kian if you wanted to.

  • I prefer it spelled the traditional way, Cian. I love it!

However, if I were faced with your situation I would drop both Kian/Cian and Andrew because you are not fond of Andrew and likewise he isn't agreeing with Kian/Cian.

    I'd start from scratch.

  • My nephew's name is Kian, and I love it.  His middle name is Alejandro, which I think sounds nice as well.  Kian Andrew flows well - I say go for it!
  • My son's name is Kian Miles so I am quite fond of the name. I also agree that spelling it Cian is the correct way but we tried to minimize the butchering!

That being said, I do agree with other people that maybe you and dh should step back and consider other options. Naming a kid is hard! GL!
  • I prefer Levi.

  • The Kian I know spells it the way you do. It's an ok name, but nms. I agree with pp. If you and DH are not on board, then I wouldn't suggest using Kian or Andrew, but I love Andrew.
