Our babysitter is a friend who happens to be a SAHM and who volunteered to watch T for us a few days a week. We pay her, but not a whole lot. For each of her kids birthdays, I've sent Tatum over with a plate of fresh baked cookies or brownies, and then given them their presents at their birthday parties. Her son's birthday was just last Friday, and his party was Saturday, so I just sent a plate of brownies over on Friday.
Today is our friend's birthday, and T will be over there tomorrow (but not today). If not for her watching T, we would probably just send her a text to say happy birthday and that would be the end of it, but I want to do something more since she takes such good care of T for next to nothing. Also, her boss at the restaurant where she bartends passed away suddenly last week, and he was a longtime family friend, and the funeral is today. On her birthday. So she's having sort of a rough time right now.
Last year, we gave her an extra day's pay (we pay her by the day) at the end of the week, since she was going out with her friends for her birthday that night. But her birthday is today, T is going over there tomorrow, and we don't pay her until Friday.
Should I buy her a gift tonight? Ideas? DH suggested baking her something, but I just did that on Friday, and they're probably still eating my brownies and the cake from her son's party on Saturday anyway. I thought of getting her one of those giant fancy cupcakes, but that's sort of the same thing. For our birthdays her kids make us cards, and had I remembered her birthday, I would've done that with T over the weekend, but I don't have time to do it tonight, since T will already be in bed by the time I get home.
Help?
ETA: that got really long - sorry! and thanks!
Re: birthday gift for babysitter?
If you want to go the baked-good route, what about a giant chocolate chip cookie?
Also, do you have time in the morning? You could make one of these cards if you have 5 extra minutes with T. Make the card tonight, and do the handprints in the morning.
How about baking some muffins or something breakfast-y instead?
Love this idea! The friend will love the flowers, and the kids will love the balloons
Maybe stop at Home Goods or somewhere like PP said and get a new pretty vase.
I'm kind of digging this idea, thanks guys!
