new to board - major questions

Hi everyone- I'm a long time lurker on the working moms board, I think this is my first time posting. Here's my question I hope you guys can help me out with!

I work part time right now, as an office administrator in a church, as well as running my own event planning business on the side. Neither pays very well right now- my day job because they screwed me over, and my business because I'm not working it hard enough. We mainly survived off of hubby's salary- that is until he got laid off last Tuesday!
I'm making chump change here and really feel like now is the time to move into a new, more lucrative position. However, I'm 22 weeks pregnant!

If hubby can't find a job making at least as much as he was making before, I will absolutely need to get a new job (otherwise I'm working to send our older DS to preschool and losing money doing it).

When is the best time to start looking for a new job? Should I be looking now? Should I wait until I'm done birthing this one? Advice and tips needed!!

Well, if in the immediate future your husband cannot find work, you should consider having him take care of your son during the day until he finds something else. You can try to find backup care, or someone willing to take care of your son when your husband has interviews, etc. He can look online for work and do resumes and what not when you're home to care for your son. In the meantime you can look for work maybe that is more fulfilling than now...you say the church is not doing right by you (truly sad)...so maybe you can find somewhere you are happier that pays more as well. I encourage your husband to sign up for unemployment ASAP, as it can take a while to get benefits approved and going. Also, FYI, your husband can have a part-time job in the meantime to help supplement what unemployment can't. You just need to look up how much that is. I was laid off for over a year, and was able to work 16 hours a week tutoring upper level math and science in the interim. I hope the best for you and your family.

Thanks for the advice! Good news is he got a severance which allows him a bit of time to search- and he's already gotten an offer, it's just lower than what he was making, so it affects our budget. I'll also remind him to get his unemployment paperwork in.

You may find a job who doesn't mind you taking time off to deliver the kid and come back. Which is rare especially since you will be going out in 17 or 18 weeks. I kinda have to look for a new job because I am being screwed over but due to actually getting STD I stayed at my current job. Are you getting maternity leave/STD? Will you be covered under FMLA? These are factors as well. Maybe the last two weeks of maternity leave start looking for new jobs if you feel up to it? Especially if hubby is home he can take care of your LO while you are out interviewing.

Honestly, I think you may have a difficult time finding a new job because if they train you, then you're gone on leave you may need more training again when you come back. Also, you may not be entitled to protected leave at a new job since you'll be there so short term. And if you interview now don't get the job, it may hurt your chances of getting it after baby comes. I wouldn't look now unless you absolutely have to. I'd wait until after you deliver if possible.
