Back aches:(

Hi everyone! This is my 1st pregnancy and I am 20 weeks this week. Last night my back ached...and hips. I read in my book this is normal....but what can I do to help the pain. I need to start walking(I live in Maine so outside is not going to happen this time of year) But will walking on a treadmill help?? Heating pad? Is this just "growing pains?"

Re: Back aches:(

  • Same issue here. I typically use a heating pad but not too hot. Have you tried laying on your left side...it's supposed to help. Also, pillows have become my best friends. I stack them up until I'm comfy. :

  • Definitley growing pains as long as you aren't having spotting or anything. Rest, heating pad and tylenol work great for me. I had a friend who lived in the bathtub her entire pregnancy but for me, its uncomfortable. To each his own. Your uterus is stretching so think of it as a sore muscle.

  • Yeah I need to get a pregnancy pillow..I toss and turn all night.
  • Heating pad on low is good. Baths help me, too. And of course the mountain of pillows that I sleep on now. If you work at a desk I would recommend bringing in a pillow or something to help support you - that made a big difference for me.

    Feel better soon!

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

my pillow was the best investment I've made so far during my pregnancy!
  • Any reccommendations on pregnancy pillows? Brands??
  • Hot shower and heat.  I'd say I use a heating pad, but I don't - I just use the heck out of my heated seats in my car ;-)  I totally look forward to my drive to/from work for this reason.

  • Yep, it's pretty normal.  I'm in love with my hot water bottle right now.

  • Yoga, pillows & heat pad.  I have been advised not to use any heat pad that you plug in to wall etc, and to only use the type of heat pads that you heat yourself in microwave or hot water etc, because these cannot get hotter once you start using them, they will only cool down, therefore not 'cooking' the baby.
