Teeth and BFing

Let's talk about this...

My LO has two bottom teeth, and BFing is not particularly pleasant, especially when he chomps down for a little comfort.

Do any of your LOs have any top teeth yet? And is it even more painful to BF?

STM should weigh in, too! Thanks.

  • Yes!! Kirsten has her bottom two aswell and ouch!! Lately she's been getting really worked up when she pops off and she bites me. Hopefully this phase passes quickly or I won't have nipples soon.

  • DS has no teeth yet, but I went through this with DD. She drew blood multiple times. Kellymom has some good ideas: https://kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/biting/

None of those ideas worked well for DD, unfortunately, so I ended up pumping and giving her bottles for a few days straight. When we went back to nursing, she was fine. Guess she needed to get it out of her system.

I think she was a particularly hard case, though (the LCs I talked to were very surprised nothing else had worked). So I share this near-worst-case scenario to say if I could make it through that stage to nurse her for 15 months, I think anyone who wants to can do it, too. :) Good luck!

  • DS2 has just cut his two bottom teeth, and it is a little uncomfortable.  It's similar to when you first start breastfeeding--your nipples just have to "toughen up" in that area where the teeth are resting/rubbing.  The pain will lessen eventually.

When DS1 was teething, I remember that the discomfort went away from the bottom teeth relatively quickly.  But, when he started cutting his top teeth, he would occasionally bite me as he finished nursing for relief (like how babies bite teething rings, etc).  But, since he already had bottom teeth--OUCH!!  He broke the skin more than once, and that kills to nurse later when your nipple has a little scab on it.  Lanolin, lanolin, and more lanolin!  And, obviously, pay close attention to LO to break the latch as soon as he/she stop nursing.  Babies physically cannot bite while they are actively nursing; they usually do it when they're finished because they're bored, think it's a game, or to relieve teething.  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the tips. I'm nervous about the top teeth, but I should pay more attention and unlatch him. Good advice.

  • Carson has four teeth. Two op and two bottom. He usually only bites when he is cutting a tooth, and I just immediately unlatch him and end the nursing session. He really doesn't bite any more and nursing is not painful or uncomfortable at all.
