Vegetarian?

Hi there,

Just wondering if there are any other vegetarians out there who can share their BF experience with me?

I am expecting my first baby in August and plan to BF until I have to go back to work, then I will start BF and pumping.

I have been a vegetarian for 14 years. I eat healthy and have never had a problem with lacking anything- blood tests always come back good! I do lots of beans, soy, vegetables, fruits... I eat eggs, but mostly drink soy milk rather than regular cows milk.. I don't do fish or poultry (I know some vegs do)

I think I should be OK, but figured it would just ease my mind a bit to know there are other BF vegetarians out there!

Thanks!!!

Re: Vegetarian?

  • I'm a vegetarian as well and have been for about 15+ years.  I BF'd my daughter for 15 months.  Big Smile  I had some issues at first, but nothing to do with being a vegetarian.  Just the normal struggles and can be overcome with perserverence. Good luck!

  • I'm 20 year veg : I do what I can with diet, but often lack vit. D and Iron. I eat dairy/eggs, but no fish, chicken etc. I was concerned at first, but my dr recommended poly vi sol for all of my babies liquid vitamin. It had plenty of vit. D and iron so I have nothing to worry about!

Maybe it's just me, but I feel it in my bones after providing Breast milk for my kids. I've upped my milk intakedoes soy milk have calcium? Might want to watch that. But line anything, be self aware and listen to your body!

  • I have been veg since I was 13 and I have been EPing for the past 4.5 months. I give LO polyvisol, on the recommendation of her pediatrician. Other than that, we have had no troubles apart from a rough start which had nothing to do with my diet. I eat dairy & eggs, no chickens or fish and have been keeping calcium up by drinking extra milk and eating tons of greens.

Your diet should not cause you any trouble as long as you make sure you are eating enough. It can be difficult to prepare meals when you are just getting the hang of BFing, so I found myself eating not so great choices on the fly. I find making a huge pot of this soup twice a month helps- it has tons of protein and is great to have on hand (Freeze individual portions). Just double the garlic and ginger & serve with brown rice.

  • I've been vegan for five years : ebf was super easy and DD got everything she needed :
  • Thank you!! I'm so glad that all of you seem to have positive experiences! I'll remember to speak with my midwife about any of the supplements LO may need. It's just nice to hear good things!

    Take care!
