Baby Names

another name issue

Yep, me again.  Sorry for the frequent posting!  We still have a ton of time left, but we had only narrowed our names down to about 12 choices when DS was born early, and I'm worried about that happening again.

DH's top name choice that I don't love is Emily.  I really don't dislike this name at all.  It just feels... unoriginal I guess?... because of how many Emilys I know or have known over the years.  I actually really like it and would seriously consider it if it hadn't been a top 20 name for the past 30+ years.

I know the top names these days have nowhere near the actual number of babies that the top names had in the 70s and 80s (and I assume before).  I just feel like, although beautiful, Emily is boring.  No offense intended to those who have that name (or their DDs).

What do you all think about Emily?  I'm not necessarily trying to convince myself, but we decided to ponder each other's top choices (Tessa and Emily) before eliminating them completely.

Re: another name issue

  • I kind of feel the same way you do about Emily.  Just meh.  It's a nice name though, nothing offensive about it.  I definitely like Tessa better.

  • I feel the exact same way you do about Emily.  I think it's a beautiful, classic, feminine name (which is my style completely), but it lacks something for me.  I love it on other kids, but I couldn't see myself ever using it and probably because I've heard it so much for so long.

  • I think Emily is a very pretty name, but I do get a little girl vibe from it and it's one of those names that I don't think "grows up" well, if that makes sense.  (FWIW, I love Tessa!)

If you don't mind an uber-popular name, what about Emma? It sort of combines the sounds of both names you and your DH like.

  • I see what you mean about Emily.  I think Tessa is an adorable option; or what about something like Amelia, which sounds very similar to Emily but has a little more to it?

  • Yeah, I totally agree with you about this name.

It's certainly pretty, feminine and spelled correctly, but that's about it.

  • I agree with you on Emily, fine but nothing special IMO. I prefer Tessa and only know one IRL
  • I love the name Emily :-) One we've got on our list!! I like the fact that it's a classic, simple & a name we agree on. HA!

  • Emily is a perfectly nice name, I just find it incredibly dull and wouldn't put it on my list.

  • I love Emily. Even though it's overused. And even though it ends in "y" which is normally not my style. I think this is probably why it's so popular... it has a classic, wide appeal. I adore Tessa, but I actually think Emily will stand the test of time better. And fwiw, I don't think there are many LO's named Emily anymore because people are afraid to use it due to popularity. Lots of Emma's out there (which is also lovely, but feels far more tired to me than Emily).
  • I feel the same about Emily. It just feels so overdone
  • tl;dr
    Emily=NMS.
