Toddler Bed Transition

We're thinking of transitioning our DD into a toddler bed soon.  She just turned two and is sleeping through the night.  She hasn't even tried getting out of bed on her own, but we would like to have her comfortable and used to the toddler bed by the time my husband goes back to work.  (I'm currently teaching, he is unemployed at this point...we thought it might be nice to transition her before he finds a job, in case it doesn't go well for the first little while!)

Any suggestions/tips/advice for us?  Thanks much!

Re: Toddler Bed Transition

  • We switched our LO to a toddler bed at 18 months, and it was an adventure. It took about a week to get her to go to bed and STAY in bed, but ever since she has been totally fine with going to sleep in it. With her, she loved that she could get out of bed and say hi to us after we put her to sleep, so we had to just be stern with bedtime. If she got up, we didn't giggle or joke about it, we just plopped her butt back into bed. It was almost like we had to redo CIO, which made me sad, but she is now 26 months and totally great at going to bed and staying there!

  • We had to transition DS 1 to a big boy bed just after he turned 2 because we needed the crib for DS2.  At first it was fine, we did our usual routine only read books on his bed rather than the floor.  After a few days he realized his freedom of being able to get out of the bed.  He could open the door and climb the gate we had in place, so for a few days it was so hard to get him to fall asleep and stay in bed.  I ended up having to stay at the end of his bed until he fell asleep.  We ultimately got the child proof door knob open thing.  We would sit with him for a bit then I'd leave after putting him down.  It took a few nights of him to not scream and bang at the door.  He finally put himself to bed then eventually just stayed in bed.  In short, it took about 2 weeks develop a new routine.

  • Don't fix something that isn't broken:)  Both kids stopped napping when they moved to a bed.  We only moved DS2 a little bit ago because he is huge and it was getting tight in there.

  • I moved both my kids right after they turned 2 and it was never a problem.  DS1 just now started getting out of his bed on his own (and that's to go potty and then he goes right back to bed!)  DS2 hasn't even figured out he can get out.  Every kid is different!

  • DD is 2.5, and we just transitioned her a few weeks ago to prepare for our son's arrival.   I was bracing myself for the worst, but we have been very pleasantly surprised.   She has stayed in bed all night every night she she's been in her new room (knock on wood).

We have kept her routine the same as before, and it seems to have worked.

    Good luck!

  • We did kind of the same thing you are talking about - DS is a great sleeper and he never tried to climb out of his crib. We transitioned him the weekend before New Year's, and he has done great. The first night, he got out twice and came in our room but we just walked him back to his room and put him back in bed and he was fine. The next two nights, he cried out pretty early in the morning and was standing at his door, but again, we walked him back to his bed and he went back to sleep with no problems. He has always been really good about us saying "It's time for nite nite" and he seems to understand and doesn't fight it. So, the first 3 days he got up a couple times but went right back to sleep - and since then, we've had zero issues. We did put a baby gate on his door though just to keep him from wandering around, he doesn't seem to mind.
