Parenting after a Loss

Back to work today...

And dmnit it sucks! I am so not ready to leave my babies. I never thought I would want to be a SAHM until I couldn't be one, and 8 weeks has definitely not been long enough. All I can think about is what happens when they cry? What if she doesn't comfort them right? Are they going to think I abandoned them? I haven't left them with anyone other than DH, and even then it was only for 2 hours. They don't KNOW her!! What if she doesn't love them right? I don't know if I can do this!! Sorry for the whiney vent ladies, I needed to say it to someone!

Re: Back to work today...

  • Huge huge hugs!!!

It's so hard to leave them.. trust me, I was back for 8 weeks, then out for 5, and now back for 4 again.. it still sucks, but it's definitely easier than it was that first week.

I, personally, call in and check once during lunch time.. it gives me peace of mind knowing DS is doing well, and helps me get through the second half of the day.

Hang in there, Momma!  I'm right there with you -- never thought I'd want to be a SAHM until now.. and, of course, financially, it's really not optimal!

  • ((HUGS))  I am not looking forward to going back to work.  I still have a while, but I keep thinking about it.  The first day I go back DH is not working, so that should help.  DS will start daycare on my second day back.  I think that I may do some crying.  ((MORE HUGS))

  • [[big hugs]] You post just made me tear up :[ I understand every word you wrote. I can't stand leaving my baby, I won't be having more and I don't want to miss a second with her. It is healthy to get away for a little but though. Is part time a possibility for you?

  • To answer your questions...

What happens when they cry -  they learn to adapt to the caregiver.  You are helping to teach them to be flexible.

What if she doesn't comfort them right -  she will comfort them right.  They will build a relationship based on the way she comforts them.  Again, you are teaching them they are loved by a larger support system than just you...what a wonderful gift.

Are they going to think I abandoned them - I know this is a rhetorical question, but just to answer anyways, "NO!".  You are their mom.  The only one they have.  They know this and love you in a way they will never love anyone else.

What if she doesn't love them right - Is there any other way to love a child than to make them feel safe and secure?   What a wonderful thing to know that people in this world care for you outside of your parents.

You are a great mom.  I know it is hard, but honestly, you are teaching your babies that they have more love in this world, how to be flexible, and that a woman can be a mom AND a career woman and still be the comforting, wonderful, mama that she always was.

  • Thank you so much ladies. Today was ridiculously difficult. I am hoping to discuss my position with my supervisor early next week, and see if they might consider letting me do some telecommuting. I have two older children, and I don't ever remember going back to work being so hard. I typically enjoy my job quite a bit, but today I had to will myself not to get up and walk out. Thank you for your kind words, they really helped me get through the day. You ladies are amazing!!

  • <<Hugs>> mama.  That's not whiney at all.  I would venture a guess that just about every mom that heads back to work has the same kind of sentiments and concerns...  Hang in there.
