So sick of negative comments about BLW...my MIL is totally against it and I have to ignore the comments but same days when LO gets more gaggy, My fear sets in that maybe they are right..anyone else?
I think if it works for you and your baby, go with it and try to ignore everyone else like you're already doing. If it's not working for your sweet one, maybe try and see if another way works. I have the same philosophy for everything baby-related... ;o) Whatever you're doing, you're doing a great job! Everyone who worries that they're not doing the right thing is being a good mom. Breathe, assess, and go with what your gut. )

My daughter eats basically everything I eat. I don't hold back any spices or anything from her. She does great as long as I cut things into tiny pieces. Don't worry about what everyone says. Do what you feel is right for your baby. As long as your LO is thriving then I would say you are doing just fine, Momma!
People will come around, they are just scared by new approaches and assume different is wrong. My mom, sister and MIL all gave me endless crap and acted like I was the worst mother on the planet every time he gagged. Now they love watching him eat real food and are constantly commenting in a positive way about how he manipulates and explores food. We are visiting my MIL this weekend and she is excited that he'll be able to share meals with everyone. When I heard about BLW while pregnant it also terrified me, but once I read more about how to do it safely and the reasoning behind it, especially the idea of giving kids choices and removing the battle over food for toddlers I was game for trying it. So glad I did.
FYI, my LO doesn't really seem to like the taste of puffs, I think because he's used to rich food with more flavor. My sister gave them to him and he put them in his mouth and looked at her like she was off her rocker. She replaced with toast fingers with hummus and he gave her a big grin and tucked in.
Don't worry about what others think. You are doing what you think is best for your child. It's not like you are going into BLW blind. Tell your MIL to suck it. lol
People are always going to criticize, so do what feels right for you and LO.
DD is great at chewing (with her gums) after we started puffs, have you given your L:O some? Since they melt it is good practice.
haven't tried puffs yet..good idea! I'll try it!
I have a question...when do we know they are ready for puffs?
At the 6 month check-up, I saw on the questionnaire a question about picking cereal/ puffs. I started by giving to her and letting her rake them on the table. I gave her some in her mouth so she could taste it and she liked it. I broke them in half, first. When I saw she was chewing, I gave her a whole one.
She progressively became more interested and now she can pick them up with pincer grasp and eat by herself.
It definitely helped when I started giving her pieces of ground meat and rice. She chews nicely.
Don't call it BLW... just say you skipped the puree stage since you waited til 6 months for solids.
FWIW several of the babies I know that were born the same time as DD who were puree- weaned are having more trouble adjusting to solids than DD ever did. They aren't chewing while DD tucks into and carefully chews everything we give her. Except Sheppards Pie. She didn't like that.
I know every baby is different, and by 2 years she may refuse everything we give her... but I am really happy we chose this route for her. I hope that when we have other children it will work for them.
My mother who nearly had a heart attack when we told her what we were doing now swears that she has never seen a child learn to eat solids with such little fuss. She can't believe how well it worked for DD.

The gagging does get a lot better. LO now might gag a little if he accidentally swallows something too large, but only gags it up just enough to chew on it again rather than previously spitting it up.
We got a lot of worry from my in-laws as well about it, but I think now they like watching him eat as he does a pretty good job at it. LO is 8 months now and he's a great eater and really seems to enjoy picking foods up and feeding himself.
