Right now I work 9-6 and DH works 3rd (11pm-7am). We have an au pair that works from when I leave in the AM (8:15) until DH wakes up at 3:00pm. He gets up and takes care of the kids, cooks and serves dinner by the time I get home.
Technically he could stay up and watch the kids until I get home, and get 4 hours of sleep before going to work (he can function on less sleep than I can), but since we can afford the au pair, that is what we are going to do. It's also nice to have us both home (and awake) for a few hours during the week.
When the kids are all in school we probably won't need childcare anymore.
I work third shift 7pm to 7am three nights a week. MH just went to day shift, he was on nights a couple weeks ago. My parents watch LO over night for us, even though DH is on days I still need some sleep. He leaves for work 2 hours before I get home. And my parents LOVE having her. When I told them DH was going to day shift they were upset, until I told them we still needed them to babysit.
The nights I work I tried to lay down with DD for her nap; I then drop her at my parents on my way to work. In the morning if DH is working I will sleep at their house for awhile, if he is home (he has a rotating) I will pick her up and then sleep at home. If we didn't have my parents to babysit, we would have DD in daycare for a few hours a couple days a week. I do not do well with no sleep. Once a week I work two nights in a row, if DH is working those days LO will just stay at my parents for the two days.
My parents want to take the kids (yay twins... /terror) but they also work third shift, so I'll be getting 6 hours max a day lol
I would get a nanny or babysitter if I were you. But I do only get about 6-7 hours of sleep a day, even with my paretns helping out.
I would also suggested getting your twins on the same sleep schedule. I work with a girl that has twins and her LOs nap at different times and she NEVER gets sleep between shifts. And she sometimes works three to four days in a row. I think she's crazy, but I need my sleep or I think I would go crazy.
