Running/Walking 5K @ 7 months?

To all of you hot mamas keeping it moving during pregnancy, have you ever ran a race while pregnant? How far along were you and do you have any recommendations? This is my first baby and I want to stay active, I will be doing this race in April. Currently I am active- cycling, swimming, yoga, walking.

  • I walked a 5K when I was about 7 months PG with DD. I also went into labor a month early, at 8 months?but I don't believe the two were related lol

First of all, the answer is no. I'm a recreational road/trail runner only. I do it for enjoyment, not competition, so I don't race (alhtough have thought of trying it).

You might not like to hear this, but the advice I have read everywhere (inc. Runner's World, but also midwives and the hospital and doctors) is that if you are going to run during pregnancy, you need to have been running *before* pregnancy to ensure that your body is used to all of that heavy impact.

Now, I know it's a run/walk, and if you are determined to do this, my suggestion is that you make it more speed-walking than running. Speed-walking is great. Seeing as you already have some fitness, running for 30 seconds every so often is probably not going to cause any problems - esp. for a 5k distance and esp. if it's just a one-off thing.

Talk to your doctor about this - get a second opinion from a doctor who knows a thing or two about sports medicine (bonus if that doctor is a runner, too).

Take care and I'm sorry. It couldn't *not* be said.

  • I did a charity 5K at about 7 months with my last PG. I'm not a runner generally (swimming, yoga, aerobics mostly) so I walked it, but I felt great afterwards and it was fun. If you're used to running you should be fine, just listen to your body and walk if you need to.

  • I was walking 5K at 7 months, but not running. I'd say go for it and if your uncomfortable running, walk.

  • I ran a half marathon at 4 weeks with DD. I ran a 10k at 4 weeks with this pg. I'm planning a 5k for the spring. I ran 5 miles on Saturday without any trouble.

If you feel comfortable running, then do it. As long as you listen to your body and don't try to over do things I don't see a problem with it in my unexpert opinion.

ETA: I worked out on the elliptical pretty hard for an hour 4 days a week when pg with DD. I did this until 12 hours before I went into labor at 39w6d. After my 38w6d workout I had 3 contractions. After my 39w6d workout I had 4 contractions. Those were the only times I noticed contractions.

All of this. I started the Disney Marathon a couple weeks back 14 weeks but only made it 8.5 miles bc I had twisted my knee earlier in the week, didn't want to "push through the pain" and cause major damage. It can be done, but I've been running for years, and was training for the marathon since August. Your body changes, joints and tendons loosen to prepare for birth, and unless you've been running since the beginning if your pregnancy I would hesitate to start now. Most 5k paces allow for a walking pace, so a quick or speed walk would probably be fine, but check with your doctor first. Have fun!
