Cross country travel

I'm from the Aug 2012 board but wanted to post this question here since my DD will be 11 months around the time we plan our vacay in July. I know quite a few of you have already gone on vacation with your LO's. Lately my DD has been really fussy in her carseat. We plan on taking ours on the plane and I can only imagine if she's that fussy later on.. she has quite the vocal cords. Everyone who hears her cry for the first time always comments on how loud she is. Does it get better as they get older? We were really hoping to travel this year while she hasn't mastered walking yet. Has anyone gone cross country? We're planning on flying from Hawaii to New Jersey with a layover in San Francisco for maybe an hour or two. Is it insane? Any words of encouragement? Thanks so much! :)

Re: Cross country travel

  • Also wanted to add: Is teething a problem at this age?

  • Unfortunately, around this age is a little difficult for travel.  We traveled a month ago for Christmas, she had a hard time on the 3 hour leg, but did fine on the 1 1/2 hour one.  The problem is they are so alert and squirmy, it's just hard for them to sit still.  IF you are lucky enough to have a LO that enjoys watching TV, this would help immensely.  I know some others on here who traveled and did well, so it's kind of luck of the draw.  One thought might be to travel later in the evening so they will just sleep the whole time?  That was our original plan but the airline changed the flight times on us :(

ETA: As for teething, usually that's not as bad as you would think, in my experience at least...

  • We've flown and traveled a fair amount with our daughter and, honestly, it just keeps getting trickier as she gets older. When she was little, she'd happily nurse and snooze the entire flight. Now, she is pissed she can't explore.

That said, her restlessness doesn't keep us from traveling; we just have to get craftier! Purchase a few new books and toys to introduce her to. L loves tactile books right now... Karen Katz lift the flap and Usbourne Touchy Feely books keep her occupied for quite some time. She also loves ripping up the SkyMall. Snacks are key... L will eat yogurt melts, Cheerios, raisins, and cheddar bunnies one at a time for a good 30 min. And TV... We don't normally do screen time, but we bust out the iPad on flights if she gets super fussy.

  • Another thought... Is your LO in an infant car seat or a convertible? My daughter started getting fussy in her infant seat around 7 mo and we switched to a convertible. She's much happier now!

  • The longer flights for us were a struggle because we only had so much room and Nat wanted to get down a lot. She would sleep for an hour out of a 3hr flight. I agree with the ladies above about traveling at night if possible, sitting by a window so LO can look outside, new activities to hold interest and maybe a DVD player in case nothing else works. It's tough and your trip is long but if you are well prepared its possible!

  • We have been traveling alot in the past month with L.  We didn't have nearly as long as a traveling day as you will traveling from Hawaii, but like the other ladies said having an 11 month old is tricky because they are extremely mobile and almost overly alert.  L wanted down to crawl or stand in front of my seat.  I imagine that she will be unhappy sitting in her car seat on the plane if she is fussy in it in the car.  On our last flight the parents who had a car seat to use on the plane had the baby cry the entire time.  I assume you will plan on taking her out so that should help?  When we fly I always hold L, but I would probably buy him a seat on such a long trip like you are doing as well.  L watched videos of himself, ate his weight in snacks, looked out the window, and did anything within reason of him being safe and not annoying the other people.  Just prepare as much as you can, do the best that you can do, and just roll with the ups and downs of traveling with an 11 month old.  Good luck!
