Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Oy.

One week ago, i gave birth to a baby boy. Well, i also have a toddler & he doesn't seem to like his baby brother. How can i get him use to his baby brother? He keeps throwing stuff at him & yelling in his face. When i am getting ready to feed my newborn, he pulls on my legs & cries. The thing is, he gets more attention than my newborn. I feel bad. I wish i could give them equal the amount of attention but it isn't happening. Help?! I am stil pretty new at this mommy thing.

Re: Oy.

  • I'm so sorry!  I only have my 16 month old but I am hoping for more children and imagine most older siblings go through this similarly.  Is it possible that you could try asking him to help out and make him feel useful with the baby so he could take some "ownership" and investment in the baby? Just a thought.  Not sure how old your other child is or if he is even old enough to have help you with these things. Sorry I am not better help!  Good luck!

  • I agree with pp that you can ask him to help out. This is a difficult adjustment for a lot of young children. Maybe ask him to get baby brother's blanket for feeding time and such, and just keep praising him for being a good helper and big brother.
