Last year we did a super Mario theme--complete with chocolate Mario mustaches. I thought about doing superhero theme this year, but I think that would be more fun when he is older. Any other theme ideas?
We're doing Sesame Street. DS really loves Elmo and he is starting to really like Big Bird and Cookie Monster as well.
Another friend of mine did trains, another one did football (his birthday was opening weekend of football season), another did a baseball theme for their favorite team. I don't know when your DS's birthday is so I didn't think of other things that could flow like a seasonal theme...?
I think at 2, kids start to "get it" a little more, so I would pick something you son is really into as a theme. If he has a favorite character, go with that. If you don't like character themes, trains, trucks, construction, dinosaurs, zoo animals, sports, etc. could all be good themes.
Once you narrow it down, check out Pintrest- there are a lot of cute ideas on there.
We did cars because it was DS most favorite thing at the time. (now he LOVES super heroes but it's a month later.LOL)
For cars- there are so many ideas out there.
For activities- I made cars out of boxes covered with white paper for the kids to decorate.. I also hung balloons from the ceiling for a car wash. Car Race track on the floor made of masking tape..
For pizza- I had donuts for spare tires, "Piston Cup Pizza", Flo's Drink Station, etc...
I was inspired by the Surf Monkey collection from Gymboree. I had a cake made, and it is turned out really cute with the colors in that collection.
My son really likes his Batman PJs from Walmart. So we will probably do a superhero theme for his 3rd birthday.

I did Sock Monkey for DS's 2nd. Monkey see, monkey do, our little monkey is turning 2. LOL. It was all brown and red themed complete with "monkey" type food. Google for TONS of ideas.
Bday party 1 was Dr. Suess. Another good choice for 2nd, IMO.
I also like trains and firetruck themed birthday parties for boys.
We did a crayon theme because DS was obsessed with coloring at the time. Look on pinterest! They have some great ideas for kid's birthdays. My friend did a YoGabba theme. I almost did a children's book, like Rainbow Fish.
