Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Question re: hCG levels dropping

I was wondering if any ladies would be willing to share their experience (thus far) with hCG levels dropping. Here's the info that I'm curious about:

- What was the highest level you reached (that you know of)?

- What was your level when you started miscarrying? (If different than the highest #)

- Have you had betas done again (yet), and if so, what were the levels?

- How long did it take for you to go <5, if you're there yet.

I know everyone is different, but I'm just curious about others' experiences. It's hard to find this kind of info.

Re: Question re: hCG levels dropping

  • Thanks for asking peanut! I have been curious about this as well.

  • I'm not sure what my level was at the time of my D&C, but on 1/10 when I had it I was supposed to be 8w3d. I went back 1/18 and my beta was 2300 and on 1/25 it was 226. I have to go back in on Friday for another...

  • I had a natural miscarriage on 12/26. I found out about the MMC on 12/21 but doc did not check HCG. I also never had betas drawn, so I don't know my highest HCG numbers.

    1. On 12/27 my HCG was 1438.

    2. On 1/4 my HCG was 27.

    3. On 1/14 my HCG was 2.

FWIW, I suspect that my HCG started falling some between 12/21 and 12/26 ( and maybe before, who know?) because I was spotting then bleeding prior to the main part of the miscarriage.

I'll throw in this, too. It looks like my CD1 will be either today or tomorrow (according to temp drop, spotting, and PMS symptoms).

I asked a very similar question about a month ago. It seemed like it took so long for everything to clear up and go back to normal. Good luck. This process stinks.

I just searched & found your post. Not many people responded, that's too bad. The first time my betas were checked was on the same day that I found out about the MMC, so I don't know if they were ever higher either. That's why I put the caveat about the highest that you know of, because I'm in the same position. I read a post about this on TTGP today -- between her #s and yours,  I'm coming to the realization that my level was very high. I think it's going to take forever for mine to drop. I am so sad about that.

  • When we found out that I was going to miscarry my HCG was 12,060. 4 days later they were 0. My doctor said that he has never seen this happen before, especially since I hadn't passed anything yet. They triple checked it. From what I was told, I thought your numbers drop below 10 when you've passed everything. When I went for a D&C I asked for another ultrasound for peace of mind and there was still the little peanut in there with no heartbeat. So we proceeded.

That is definitely weird. Did you ever actually see the paperwork? If it was me, I would ask for a copy of the bloodwork results.

Was that 12,060 number the highest that you are aware of?

That was the highest I was aware of. I never asked for my numbers from my initial blood work that was done 4 days prior to the day we found out we miscarried.

I didn't ask to see the paperwork, but I wish I would have. I would have given another blood sample, but was in such a blurr, I wasn't thinking properly.

I hear ya. It's hard to think properly between the shock and the drugs. You still could request the bloodwork results, though.

My first Beta was drawn at the ER when I found out I was miscarrying

     It was 2187 on 1/13

I had them drawn again on 1/21 they were then 32.2

I am due to go back in 2/4 for my next draw

I think there was another post about this last week were there were some good responses?  I look for it an edit it I find it.

    Edit: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/71461626.aspx

Yes, I saw that one too. Thank you. I guess I'm discouraged because my numbers are really high. I was hoping that someone would have numbers near mine & be able to share their story. My level on Wed (when the MMC was discovered) was just under 95,000. I have a feeling I have a long road ahead of me for my body to go back to normal. :(

I'm sorry that would be discouraging...

I did some googling and found this...

That's a great one. I didn't see that one in my searching. Thanks!

ETA: These all appear to be girls with molar pregnancies. I haven't been diagnosed as such. I guess I'll have to wait until my blood is drawn on Thursday to see what my body might decide to do. Ugh.

  • I don't know the exact path of my betas, but I had a late 1st trimester miscarriage and by 10 days post miscarriage I was at a 24.  I will have more bloodwork done this week and hopefully I will be at a 0.

  • I was 8w6d when I learned I miscarried and baby measured about 6 weeks, my levels were 23,000 that day, December 26th. My dnc was December 28th. I tested at home two weeks later and had a faint positive, meaning it was still around or over 25, that is the level my home test measured. My RE did blood work 3 weeks after, January 18th and my level was 4. I started spotting this Saturday, 4 weeks later, but my period hasn't started yet. I was shocked it is going right on schedule. Not sure if it helps but just sharing.

  • I went in for my first u/s at 11 weeks and found out we the baby was about 7 weeks in development. When I look back at my levels at around 6 weeks it was 15,432 and then again at 8 weeks it was 34,586. I had bleeding around 6 weeks when they started the testing and everything kept rising so they "weren't concerned". In retrospect I wish had asked for an earlier u/s and perhaps not have waited so long to find out I miscarried.  I decided to naturally miscarry and hope that was successful because I have stopped bleeding. I'm going in for another u/s next week to make sure all is well and to begin the hCG level testing.  I hope it is back down to 0 so the reminder isn't there every week until it does go down.

  • Thanks for asking this, Peanut.  I asked around where I work today because I work with a bunch of women nurses who pride themselves in knowing everything medical!  :)  They told me it really depends on the person, the hcg level, etc.  But overall, they said, on average, it will take approx 2 weeks ... give or take.  I never had my levels drawn, so I'm not sure where mine were. I don't even know if they'll do a blood draw at my Weds appt.  I have been charting my temps and notice them steadily start to drop, which to me, may be indicative of my levels dropping.  I've also been peeing on sticks every couple days and they're getting progressively lighter.  Thursday will be a week since D&C ... so I'm hoping by the 2 week mark I'll be close to under 5?  I'm hoping.  Anyway, some interesting answers from the other ladies and looks like their timelines somewhat support the approximately 2 week mark ... give or take.

I am hoping that I won't be an exception to the 2ish week time frame, but with my super high levels, I am concerned. This thread actually made me more nervous. :(

Lia, I hope your levels have dropped too. Keep us posted next week when you have your ultrasound & bloodwork!

  • My high was around the day of my D&C at 36,000. We knew for a week that we had a missed MC, and my numbers were much lower a week prior.

Turns out my pregnancy was ectopic, so D&C wasn't able to remove anything, so I had to get on methotrexate. Day 4 (3 days after injections) I was at 33000. Day 7 I was at 27000. Then, on day 14, my numbers dropped down to 9,000.  I go again Thursday for another blood draw, and will get results Friday morning. I'm hoping for another big drop... I was nervous after a week that it went down so little, but my OB said sometimes it takes your body a few days to realize what's going on, and then things typically go much faster.
    Best of luck to you!
