Cloth Diapering

If daycare won't use CD?

The daycare we are currently looking at to put our baby in does not take CD. At least that is what the paperwork says, I haven't gotten a chance to actually talk to them about it.

My question is, if they won't take CD, do you think it is still worth it to CD at home for evenings and weekends?  Should I just plan on buying less diapers?

Thanks for any advice!

  • our daycare will do it but I would be the first person to ask and they all acted weird about it...so we are CDing on the evenings and weekends. It will still be worth it and we will still be saving money! Eventually when LO gets bigger I am going to see if they will entertain the idea again, but for now, I am keeping my mouth shut.

  • I think it depends on why you are doing it and what kind of diapers you use. We do it because the diapers are adorable and its much friendlier for my LOs skin (and I'm not crazy about the chemical exposure with sposies), so it would be worth it to diaper part time. If you are doing it to save money, and you use prefolds, you're probably still saving in the long run. We wouldn't have saved anything, because we did mostly pockets and AIOs (DH refused to use prefolds), so our CD spending has definitely been on the higher end.

But I would try to talk to the daycare about it and show them how easy it is. Honestly, if you use pockets or AIOs, CDing a breastfed baby is no more challenging for daycare than using sposies. They just have to toss the dirty dipes into a wet bag instead of into the trash.

  • I'm using pockets and I will still save money b/c I won't be buying dipes as much. As long as you don't go overboard with your stash it is worth it. Using prefolds is not the only way to save money. I buy seconds and gently used diapers as well.

  • I think it is still worth it, especially if you plan on having more than once child.  The savings won't be as much for the first child, but you will save on the second child.  Not to mention the fact that you are keeping chemicals away from your child as much as possible.

I also agree that you should at least talk to you daycare about their policy.  Our daycare didn't have a no CD policy, but she was reluctant.  When I showed her how easy it was to CD with pre-stuffed pockets, she was willing to give it a try.  DS is now 21 months and has been at DC since he was 4 months.  She loves the CD's.  The don't smell as bad a disposables and they're cute.  She has shown them to the other parents and she always looks at what DS is wearing and carefully selects which diaper she is going to put on him so that he coordinates!

  • Our DC won't do cloth and I don't have the energy to argue, so we do cloth evenings and weekends. I would still say it's worth it because the cloth holds in messes way better than disposables ever have for us. We still get messy clothing back from daycare a lot of days, but at least at home we don't have to deal with messy clothing or whatever LO was sitting on at the time.

Cost wise, it's probably a wash. LO is allergic to suedecloth which eliminates a lot of the pockets and AIOs as options, so we use cotton or hemp fitteds or prefolds. Those tend to be a bit cheaper, so it's not too bad. We have a dozen prefolds and a 19 fitteds and do laundry on Wednesdays and Sundays.

  • You could check with them and see if they would be open to using an AI2 system like Grovia/Flip/gDiaper. You could provide disposable inserts for DC and have cloth at home. Just make sure they put the covers in a wet bag!

I do know that some states have passed laws in regards to cloth diapers not being used in daycares :( But more likely than not, they just have NO idea how easy it can be for them!

Another great cloth diaper alternative to check into are Honest Diapers, if you are concerned about chemicals in disposables and whatnot. Good luck!
