Food Fail- tell me how to fix this please

Connor will eat purees and anything carbs (puffs, crackers, bread, pancakes) he'll also chew on the occasional cucumber slice. I stopped pumping last week because I'm an idiot and did not think about that fact that most of his nutrition comes from breastmilk.

He drinks about 5 oz of BM mixed with a lot of WCM throughout the day and I nurse him when we are together. He doesn't like anything to textured or anything that feels weird when you hold it (apple slices for example). I think part of the problem is that he only has 2 teeth, and the third is just barely poking out.

Should I try and resume pumping? Supplement with formula? I'm just concerned about getting enough nutrition in this kid and kicking myself that I didn't think about this before I quit pumping.

  • I would probably just work on getting him interested in more foods, and fill in the missing parts with purees. Lucia loves chicken, pork, yogurt, beans, peanut butter and cheese for protein. She prefers foods with herbs and spices or sauces over plain foods. Anything can be hidden in a quesadilla. I'd probably just keep offering different things until he gets used to them, but I try hard to not get too worried about that kind of thing. I'm sure there are other moms who feel the opposite way.

  • I agree with Molly.  Just keep offering him solids, as frustrating as it may be if he doesn't eat them.  You can always save what isn't eaten and try again.  Keep giving him purees in the meantime.

As for food ideas, smoothies are great if he has figured out straws or you can help him drink from a cup (I find them too thick for sippy cups).  You could also try veggie muffins or spinach/veggie patties or pancakes if he likes carb things.  They are loaded up with nutrition, but don't feel squishy or weird, so he might eat them. Have you tried berries or peas yet?

I agree with everything Molly said.  If you are concerned with a particular vitamin given in BM just find foods that are high in that particular vitamin.  You can't use BM or formula forever so I think it's best to work on a vitamin enriched diet that offers a variety of foods.  They won't like everything and sometimes they start to refuse their old favorites but if all you offer is healthy options they will begin to conform.

I used to send cheerios for snacks at school and now I only do fruit and cheese.  I make sure her meals have veggies and I am looking for new recipes that allow me to add extra veggies that she doesn't taste.  I can mask the taste of kale with sweet potatoes and I started making her smoothies with yogurt, WCM, fruit and baby oatmeal.  She loves it and it's really healthy.  Just start being creative now because I think we have a lot of years of picky-ness to live through.

  • DS will eat some things off a fork that he is not willing to touch with his fingers. He also eats a lot more if I put Mrs. Dash on veggies and meats.

  • DS was much the same way, and I don't know if this is the case for you, but he does not want to TOUCH the food, he wants to EAT it.  He will eat anything (almost) if I put it on a fork or spoon.  The number of things he will self feed reliably is zero, including puffs, cheerios.  I am not counting pouches, he "self feeds" those like  a champ.

He still gets 1 pouch as a "second breakfast/morning snack" and 1 with dinner.

So can you spoon feed him calories with some more texture, if he does not touch it?  DS is also still eating itty bitty pieces.  The only exception is pasta pickups, about half the time he can manage a whole one of those (but again, I have to feed it to him).

  • PPers have said pretty much everything I was going to say, but I will go ahead and give a huge DITTO to smoothies. L eats most everything, but she's been on a bit of a veggie strike lately. I do Greek yogurt or goat's milk + a frozen banana and then I get creative... berries will mask spinach and green peas really well.

If he likes carbs, have you tried macaroni with spinach or peas or broccoli chopped up really small and mixed with the cheese?  You could even puree the veggies and add them to the cheese sauce.

  • Lucia loves broccoli cheddar soup, if people are trying to add veggies :

  • I'll claritfy a bit. I know pasta is a carb, but he actually won't eat pasta of any shape or size. He won't eat any meat, actually he puts it in his mouth, chews a bit and then spits it out. Not sure if this is a flavor thing or a texture thing. He also won't eat oatmeal, but will sometimes eat yogurt.

I made him roasted apple slices with cinnamon and he won't touch them, or let me feed it to him with my fingers, but I'll try a fork tonight. I'll also try a quesadilla and smoothie tonight or this week.

I understand that we have some years of picky-ness ahead of us, but I'm just concerned that there are about 5 things he will eat and none are especially healthy. I'll try blending up veggies and/or fruit and putting them in batter. I'm just mad at myself that I made it through 11.5 months of pumping, only to fail him nutrionally now.

    Thanks ladies!

  • You're not failing him! Some kids just take longer to get used to foods. I would just keep offering healthy foods, and purees and sometime he'll get it. Unless there is a concern of swallowing problems or something like that, then talk to doctor.

  • If you are looking to supplement, I have been very happy with the soy toddler formula we went with.  It's Baby's Only - the pedi said it was spot on compared to formula but could also be used after 1 in place of WCM if needed.  (We don't need to, but I will use it because 1) he likes it and 2) I bought too much of it).  Apparently he prefers it to EBM at day care, but they make him drink all of the EBM first and only have this stuff if he still needs more.

If you feel like you need to fill in some nutritional gaps there is no reason not to try supplementing.  It is why DS gets some.

And this is all a process.  Kids are quirky.  He might not eat a variety of things until he's 2.  And that would be OK, as you are on top of his nutrition and working with him.  Take each day as it comes, and try not to worry about it.  (easier said than done).
