NBR: For those who have had Invisalign

I had Invisalign about four years ago.  It took about a year for my full correction to happen, and at that point I was given a set of "trays" that I was only supposed to wear at night.  A few months in after I got pregnant with LO the trays in my mouth at night made me uncomfortable so I stopped wearing them.

I decided last night that I needed to go back to using my trays.  I paid for these teeth, and I need to keep up with them.  It's been about a year and a half since I stopped using them, and, my trays fit but I can tell my teeth have shifted somewhat.  Getting re-fitted isn't an option (I no longer have dental), but I don't want them to shift so far back that I'm back to square 1.

My question is, do you think if I wear them all day and night for a few weeks my teeth will shift back to where they should be (like how each tray during the process would shift the teeth a tad)?  Or would you just wear them at night still and not try and correct any past shifting?

  • I've never had Invisalign, but I remember with regular braces, if you didn't wear your retainers for awhile and tried to put them in, they'd be painfully tight for a week or two but then your teeth would gradually start to shift a bit and everything would be comfortable again. If they fit, and it isn't terrible, I'd give it a try, it couldn't hurt. Your teeth are always going to shift a little bit no matter what, though. I remember my orthodontist saying that if you wanted your teeth to stay in this position forever, to wear the retainers every night for life otherwise, after a couple of years of the retainers, your teeth will be pretty well stuck in place with only minor shifting.

I should point out that this advice was given to me (and I feel ancient even saying this) 25 years ago when I had my braces. For all I know, that advice could've been proven wrong a thousand times over. I did recently find my retainers and tried to get one in (not even close) but my teeth still look great so the orthodontist might've known something!

  • I'm actually in the same position! hah.  Did you have any rubber bite thingies from right after switching trays? My plan is to use those and bite a lot while watching tv.  I'm going to wear the trays 24/7 until they are less uncomfortable and then go back to only night wearing.

It's definitely been a little more than minor shifting (my crowding was becoming visible again).  It was pretty bad pain for the first two days, and now it's just a dull ache when I take them out.  I'm already seeing improvement, but I'm thinking I'll keep wearing them all day until the ache goes away and then stick to only at night (for the rest of my life, eek!).

I didn't get any rubber bite thingies (those sound fun to me haha) - Just a new set of trays once they removed the brackets.  Sounds like we've pretty much got the same plan.  Good luck with yours!
