Recommend your car/suv

We are in the market for a new/used vehicle.  Need something with 4wd for snow and mountains, room enough for one baby, one border collie, and lots of stuff (tents, coolers, bikes, boats, etc.)  I would like excellent gas mileage.  What do you think?

Disclaimer: DH requested this post.

Re: Recommend your car/suv

  • I had a Ford Escape for 8 years until this past fall.  I loved that vehicle.  Lots of room, a good sized cargo area, handled like a car and good gas milage (about 23 mpg).

I have a Saturn Vue now and it is a bigger SUV, but doesn't have the cargo or interior space that the Escape had.

  • DH says to look into the Ford Escape Hybrid. DH is a know-it-all when it comes to cars/trucks. GL in your vehicle search. Too bad you aren't looking for a minivan; I love my Honda Odysey!

  • I don't own one, but I have a couple of friends that both love their Ford Edge. My DH hates SUVs, but if he didn't, I would have one too. I'm not sure how they are on gas mileage, but they are nice cars and plenty large for everything you need. We have a Nissan Versa hatchback and love it, but probably not as big as you'd like.

  • We love our Honda CRV. We also liked the Ford Escape Hybrid.

  • I bought a 2013 Durango Citadel about 2 weeks ago. We LOVE it! We traded in our Ram for it knowing that we would have the same engine that hauled our trailers/boats/etc. We plan on 4 kids, and it has the 3rd row, but it doesn't have as much room behind the 3rd row as I would have liked. However, we payed a heck of a lot less for an extremely loaded Citadel then we ever would have for the same options in a slightly bigger Suburban/Expedition/etc. We also have dogs and needed the option for hauling stuff/gear, and this fit what we were looking for exactly. As stated, it may be a bit more tough come kids #3 & #4 for extra space, but getting everything we wanted (plus extras!) in a vehicle and sacrificing a little space was worth it to us.

  • Have you looked into a Subaru Outback?  Or a Honda Pilot?  I don't own either but next time we look for a car, those are at the top of my list.

Have you sat in the driver's seat of the Subaru? My FIL has one and it's AWEFUL!! In the 2 years that he's had it, I sat in it once to move it into the garage and will not ever sit in it again. Talk about claustrophobic! Sadly, the Honda Pilot gets really bad gas mileage and there's not a lot of room in the back for camping gear.

  • Thank you so much!  This is very helpful.  Right now I have something similar to a Nissan Versa hatchback and it works, but won't hold all our gear.  I could get racks, I suppose, but it's also not great in the snow.  We want to keep my car for commuting.  DH has a two-seater pick up that needs to go!  (He's on board with this.)  We aren't planning for more than 2 kids and don't want anything too large.
  • I have my eye on the newer Jeep Grand Cherokee. It gets decent fuel mileage if you get a V6. I think it gets 23 Highway MPG. It has 35 cu sq ft of cargo space in the back. DH has done lots of research on this SUV. :)

This is what gets me... my car gets 32 around town and 36 or more on the highway...  I wish we could wait until the vehicles we want are more fuel efficient!

  • Hmmmm...interesting.  I wonder if it is to specific model years?  A friend who is tall (over 6 feet) and stocky had an Outback as a loaner car for a week and he really liked it.  But no, I looked in his when he had it but I didn't get in.

  • Love our 2012 pilot. Actually gets great mileage for the space it has. 21 mpg around town and if I drive the speed limit or 5 over on the interstate I get an average of 26 mpg.

  • we love our odyssey. i think 4wd is an option but not positive cause we didn't get it. we've only had it a couple months, but the seats are super comfortable and there's plenty of room with the car seats. gas mileage isn't 32 mpg like my civic, but it seems decent for that type of car/van.

  • We love our Toyota Venza.  It's a cross over, so you are not stepping up into the car - just across.  It gets decent gas mileage (and takes 87 octane) and the interior is spacious and pretty well designed for a Totota (not super utilitarian).
