Those that CD: Detergent

I'm going to try switching to CDing both girls. I'm going to start CDing Abby probably next week.  I've already got (well they're coming in the mail) all my CDs (BumGenius 4.0). Now, I really just have a question about detergents.

I've done some reading about why most typical liquids are not good for CDs. However, I need to some help understanding why not all "free and clear" powders (e.g., All) cannot be used. I was hoping some of you veterans can help explain!

I guess what it all boils down to, are we really saving more money if we have to buy our special detergent online versus being able to buy it in a "chain" store like Walmart? Are there any more "commercial" detergents that I can use that I can buy at a place like Walmart, Target, Costco, etc.?

Re: Those that CD: Detergent

  • I believe that you can use Tide free and clear.  If you don't have hard water like I do, I can give you a recipe for homemade detergent that is super simple!  It worked for us for short term, but not long term because of how hard our water is.  We're still using it every now and then, but mostly using Nellie's (which is a Canadian brand, I think).  Soap nuts are another option that are CD safe.  I think the CD board has a spreadsheet about detergents. . .

BGs aren't cheap. So I wouldn't take my chances with regular detergent. We used Rock N Green, but Allens is another one recommended for CDs.

I've ready about both of those CD degtergent brands. Maybe I haven't done enough research, but do you just buy the detergent online or can you find it somewhere locally?

Hmm, I haven't run across that spreadsheet yet. I asked this same question to them this morning, so hopefully I'll get some responses.

We don't have hard water and neither does the city we're moving to. I'd love to hear your "formula"!

  • I got the recipe from here.  (This blog has tons of other helpful info, especially when you're starting out.)

Basically, I did the small batch, which is

    1 cup washing soda
    1 cup borax
    1/2 cup of oxiclean

The ingredients shouldn't be too hard to find (we had a bit of trouble tracking down washing soda in our city, but that's just 'cause I didn't know where to look).

Also, here's a post from the CD board's FAQ that has some sites with CD-safe detergent lists.

  • We Use Charlie's soap, we just wash all of our clothes with it. It's pretty inexpensive as far laundry detergent goes. I do know some people are sensitive to it though.

  • We've used Tide for 15 months with no issues.  I think the "CD Safe" thing is a big myth.  You need good detergent to clean gross stuff.

I do a warm cycle with just water (because my washer doesn't have a separate rinse cycle) and a hot wash with the recommended amount of detergent plus one extra rinse.

  • We have used Tide regular powder, not the Free & Clear, for about 10 months. I was hesitant because both kids have eczema but it hasn't caused any skin issues. We used it only on diapers and then switched to all our laundry a few months ago.

  • We use regular Tide powder and we have never had any issues. We tried Rockin' green when we first started and I didn't find it was strong enough for us. Also, the reason you can't use Free and clears are because they contain brighteners which could cause your diapers to repel

  • I have BG diapers and used RocknGreen in the beginning and it worked fine, but I was also line drying in the sunshine. Once I stopped line drying, they had a weird smell to them. So I used two tablespoons of Oxiclean in the drum during pre wash and All Free and Clear as the detergent. They always came out smelling brand new.

  • I use both Rockin Green and Tide Powder. I think the Free and Clear have some sort of additive that makes them incompatible. I think the tide works as well as the Rockin Green.
