Formula vs WCM

Hi Ladies,

We just introduced LO to WCM yesterday, and she LOVED it.  I was wondering if she will need the same amount of WCM as she did formula.  E.g., is an 8 oz bottle of WCM the same as an 8 oz bottle of formula?  We're planning on transitiioning the bottles to sippie cups, but I have a feeling that the night time bottle won't be dropped for a little while.

Thanks!

Re: Formula vs WCM

  • Probably a good question for your pedi. At LO's 1 year appt our pedi said no more than 24 oz of WCM a day.

  • No. She needs a limit to ward off anemia.

DD gets 2  8 oz. milk sippy cups a day. Other than that its water.

  • The common recommendation is 16-24oz of WCM max. Too much can lead to issues with iron absorption and can take the place of solids which offer different necessary nutrients.

Definitely something to talk with your Pedi about, but generally speaking it's advised to limit WCM.

    ?????

Cows milk has very little iron and negatively impacts iron absorption so too much can lead to anemia.

  • When we switched to WCM, DS was taking 30oz of formula/day. We originally thought we just needed to replace the formula with the WCM, but that wasn't right. DS had major constipation issues from too much milk so we cut back to 16oz/day of WCM.

It's not just a transition of formula to WCM, but also a transition from a mostly liquid to a mostly solid diet.

  • Thanks to everyone for their feedback.  I spoke to our pedi who said 16-24 oz of WCM a day.  I expressed concern at LO's tendency to only eat carbs and she recommended keeping her on purees for her fruits/veggies/protiens until she starts eating a bigger variety of food.  She didn't think vitamins were necessary at this point.
