Cloth Diapering

first run with a CD... not encouraging!

I have prepped all of the diapers for LO, but DS is still in disposables. Before, when I tried to put a one-size CD on him, he flipped out. I'm not sure why. Last night, after his bath, I thought I'd give it another whirl and thankfully, he enjoyed the red color and didn't mention anything about the CD.

It's a cheapo from China (Babyland) but I stuffed the pockets with 2 microfiber inserts. It was bulky but I figured, the bulkier the better to keep his urine in. This was at 10 pm. (He was late getting to sleep.)

At 2:30 am, he woke up crying that he had peed the bed.... and peed the bed he did. It was everywhere.

Do you think it was just the diaper/inserts? Is he just a heavy wetter that, if he were CDed, he'd have to have more absorbent overnights? I'm kind of discouraged now, thinking that I am going to constantly deal with this with LO.

Any advice? Encouragement? Tips?

  • IMVHO microfiber sucks in general, but espcially overnight. (For those who can't see her ticker, her kid is 2 years and 8 months old) Most toddlers will need more absorbency than two microfiber inserts. You can try buying hemp to go under one of the microfiber, or you could try an ON fitted.

Is he still in diapers during the day?

Is microfiber generally okay for younger babes? I think a microfiber mix is what came with all of my pocket diapers that I have.

He is in diapers during the day, yes. We're working on PT and it has been a slooooow process. He will wear a diaper, but he also goes on the potty at home and at day care, but flips when he doesn't have a diaper on.

I'm pretty sure most people use microfiber for the entirety of their diapering days. You may want to add doublers if he is a heavy wetter and leaks out of them. Most people use hemp for that. (If you have a sewing machine there's a DIY tutorial here https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/71137117.aspx)

If he isn't leaking out of them then just the microfiber would work. You may find you need both inserts for the daytime wetting since he's older.

Nighttime diapering is a whole different ballgame from day.

  • I cloth diaper my 2.5 yo at night. We use one bamboo insert and one JoeyBunz premium hemp insert. The inserts aren't completely soaked in the morning either. I tried combos with microfiber but didn't like how bulky the diaper got.

Also, she still has chubby thighs, but as she gets older, her waist seems to be slimming out. The one time she leaked, I don't think I had the diaper snapped tight enough. On my Alvas, I'm on the 2nd or 3rd snap in around the leg - sometimes 2nd on one side and 3rd on the other. Otherwise we get a gap in the front waist.

  • I agree with PPs, get some hemp inserts!  I have JoeyBunz, which are my favorite, and I have some Thirsties hemp inserts too.  DS is a very heavy wetter and for nighttime, I use 1 MF, 1 JoeyBunz and 1 Thirsties.  No leaks :)

  • I also cloth diaper my 2 year old at night. Hemp inserts work amazingly for him. They are much thinner than the microfiber ones I have but dont use.
  • I like MF for at home, or if my daughter is wearing a diaper for a shorter period of time. Naps, overnight and if she's at the park, or going to be in a diaper longer we've found natural fibres, or fitteds are the only way to go.

For naps and overnight the only combination that doesn't leak for us is a fitted with a wool cover. I love Sustainablebabyish OBF's, Old School Cool, and Twinkie Tush Night Nights for overnight. With all of them I have to add an additional hemp insert.

  • Thanks ladies! I have hemp prefolds, but not hemp inserts. I will be purchasing and prepping this week before LO gets here. I can, at least, try them out with DS and see how he does. (Sans the shiitty Babyland diapers) I have better OS covers I can use.

I have one of those babyland diapers and it is complete trash. Even when I put my good inserts in they leak everywhere. My friend tried some with her daughter and got the same results. I say don't get discouraged and try a different diaper. FWIW my son is about as old as yours an he sleeps with 1 to 2 microfiber inserts in a kawaii goodnight heavy wetter diaper and we've never had a leak.

Those diapers are pretty bad and the inserts they come with suck donkey. So try a different type and don't be to discouraged. Also, my 3yr3mo old is a super heavy wetter and I'm still looking for an ON option for him

  • I would have a soaking wet kid with pretty much any pocket diaper stuffed with just 2 microfiber inserts for overnight.

So, don't stress. As PPs mentioned there are much better quality diapers out there than Babyland. If you have other brands try those and do your test runs during the day. (My usual diaper testing is daytime, naptime and then if I'm confident, overnight).

Overnight diapering can be challenging. I use fitteds with wool normally, but will occasionally use a Kawaii HD2 stuffed with a Flip organic insert and a JoeyBunz premium insert. Microfiber is not an overnight (or even a naptime) diapering fabric at my house and hasn't been since DD was about 5 months old. She can be a peeing machine so I just don't want to run the risk of wet sheets.

  • I agree overnight is tough. Start using cloth during the daytime til you get used to it.

I ended up using 3 inserts at night. 1 Easy peasies charcoal 5 layer insert, 1 easy peasies hemp (doesnt get affected by compression leaks) and 1 microfiber insert.

DD goes to bed with a bottle and this combo worked for us. nothing else did though. not even 3 micros
