Constipation Anyone?!?!?!

I know this is a very unpleasant topic!!  But I have been struggling for the last few weeks with constipation.  I am the go every day kind of person.  Now I will go 2-3days without going!!  I have tried stool softners, miralax, stool softners and miralax together, adding more fiber to my diet, eating more fruits and vegetables, and also exercise.  NOTHING seems to help!  Today I am adding Activia to my diet per a suggestion from my doctor.  Anyone have any tips or suggestions???  Any advice would be appreciated!!

  • I have zero advice! I can't go either and have tried it all.

  • This is probably flameful advice, but when all else fails I will eat really greasy fried chicken fingers.  Kinda clears everything out in that really bad for you way.

  • I had it really bad with my first pregnancy, but not very often this time around.  I second the addition of Activia!  I have that with a high fiber cereal and cup of coffee in the morning and it does the trick every time.  I don't know if you're doing coffee, but it could help.   Cherry essence flavored prunes can work too, and they taste ok.

  •  I have way more experience with this then I would like to have.

     --------------

    Fiber One for breakfast

High fiber foods during the day

Mylanta (Tums can be contipating) 2x per day for tummy upset

2 stool softeners at night after dinner

1 suppository every few days as necessary (use when you have at least 1-2 hours to go) I usually use after dinner.

Along the same vein, peanut butter can act as a laxative due to the oils in it.

I bought some fiber gummies to add extra fiber to my diet that I take in the morning with my breakfast and also drink some coffee.  It used to do the trick for me also till recently.  Hopefully the Activia helps!

  • I have a cup of coffee or hot tea in the morning after OJ and fiber cereal. That always does it for me. In the first trimester when I was not having caffeine I would go to Olive Garden. Something they cook with makes me have to go, no matter what I order.
  • I experienced constipation one time during this pregnancy and it was the first time in my life. IDK if everyone's constipation felt as bad as the time I had but it was so AWFUL. I am so sorry and feel for you :(

  • I have had it for a while and have tried quite a number of things after the fiber pills didn't work.

I drink Sunsweet Plum Smart juice (I dilute it with water, but I am weird and find most drinks too sweet, I dilute Gatorate too so go figure..)

I have also found out that a bowl of Pomegranate everyday helps tremendously.

  • My doctor suggested two things: warm prune juice or Phillips milk of magnesia. She told me to try prune juice first and if I couldn't take it then go for the milk of magnesia.I tried the warm prune juice and OMG I just couldn't take it. I tried it cold as well. Still couldn't do it. My sister suggested I follow up the milk of magnesia with warm water. I did that and it worked. It wasn't something I had to do every day. The one dosage stuck with me for a couple days. The specific one I used was the strawberry flavor, stimulant free.
  • Ok, a cup of coffee so did the trick last night.
  • Thanks for the tips ladies!  I am very willing to try anything I haven't already tried!!

  • I always seem to have luck with very spicy food. I am not going to say that it is pleasant but it generally gets things moving again. Also, the vitamins in brightly colored peppers are supposed to be very good for baby! A little plus in the process.

Ha, this is what I was thinking. A little Taco Bell or a good greasy burger will clear that right up!

  • Quinoa is high in protein and fiber.  You can substitute it for rice or just make it and add to a salad.  Flax seed meal also helps.  I add it to my smoothies for breakfast.  Kefir is better than activia, you can get it with less sugar and it is higher in protein.

  • Making sure you are completely hydrated will go a long way! Good luck!
  • I take a pro-biotic supplement (my OB said any were fine).  Also, try to stay away from dairy (cheese is the worst offender).  I find that milk with my cereal and yogurt doesn't cause an issue.  Oh and if you are taking fiber pills or something make sure you drink A LOT of water at the same time or it will do the opposite of what you want!

    Hope some of this helps.
