This will be quick, but I'm annoyed and it needs to go somewhere...

As I've been going to my friends' birthday parties, each one has had at least one set of parents who has flown in to be with their grandchild on their first birthday.

My Mom sent me an e-mail letting me know to expect her birthday gifts in the mail, asking me to wrap them for her.  I sent her a note to reaffirm that she would be invited to Audri's birthday party.  Her response was that they would come if it was possible.

I don't understand how a plane ride isn't possible.  She goes to see my oldest sister (who has no kids) all the time for no reason, and that's just a plane ride as well.

Yet another example of why I don't live near my family.  I am sad that this is what Audri gets exposed to, but glad she's not exposed to it on a regular basis.

    Totally understand. Just remember we get two families in life: the ones we are born with and the one we choose. Choose to surround your daughter on her birthday with people who love her. That is the most important thing!

    That really sucks! I'm kind of in the same boat with Ian's dad. Let me start by saying he lives 15 minutes down the road. I asked him today if he's coming to Ian's bday party. His reply was, he doesn't know because he has "tentative" plans to be out of town that weekend! Father of the year!!!!

    I am so sorry. My ILs live far. They are coming to Austin's party but were contemplating not and I was upset. Just remember your mom will be the one missing out on a great relationship with your daughter if she continues this.

    Both sets of Grandparents live far away from us.  I invited both sets, but realistically knew that them coming to his party was not in the plan.  We had just seen my parents last week and had seen DH's family at Christmas time.  If it is a money thing or a time because of work, I could understand.  If they have no other reason than they simply don't want to-I would be upset.  In the case of L's grandparents it is a work and/or money issue to make it to his party.

    Thanks for the words of reassurance... My Mom doesn't work, she was a stay at home mom and all her kids are grown.  My Dad makes more than enough money for them, they take a month-long vacation every year.  They are just self-absorbed.  I like the comment we make our own family, it is very true!!
