Ours is moving up to size 5 pants and I have decided to just start buying size small boys shirts for him. He is like me, long trunk with shorter legs. The pants will be long and need hemmed for a while. I had the same problems throughout my life. He will be 20 months February 2nd and is over 100% in weight and 95% in height but he is stronger then the average kid.
This will probably vary a lot....my DD is in the 95th percentile for height and 50th percentile for weight....long and lean....
She currently wears size 18-24 months pants and size 2T tops. Although she is lean, she's very tall, so I have to buy bigger sizes to accommodate her long torso.

Yea, I think this is really dependent on your kid and the brand, unfortunately. But FWIW my son wears anywhere from 18 month-2T. The PJs that fit him best are 3T.
Max is in 18-24 but I think he is about to move up to 2T already. DS1 was actually behing in clothing sizes and still doesn't really always fit into 3T. He is tall enough but we have to buy pants with the adjustable elastic in the waste band in order for him to keep his pants on.
My LO is 19.5 months and in 18 month clothes still, but 2T are not too big. She has a very large head, so I typically go up a size in shirts so it is more comfortable for her when putting on/taking off shirts.

Length is 2T but waist size is still about 12months. She's really small but tall. I am still holding on to her tops that are 9mos. LOL they still fit her but a little short.

DS is barely in the 20th percentile....I just cleared out the rest of his 12 month clothes yesterday. He's wearing all 18 months, althought the pants are still a tad long.

My DD is on the tall side, so she is in 2T for everything right now. Some 24M still fits, and the 2T is a bit on the big side, but we are buying 2T. I expect her to be in it at least through the spring, if not deep into the summer.
Z will be 20 mos on the 1st and just under the 50th %. She's in mostly 18-24 mos for tops (ON) and some 18 mos (Carters) She's got tiny little legs and no bum so her pants are still 12-18 mos.
She fits pretty well into size 18 months right now. But I have so much 24m/2t stuff that I've been using them and rolling up the sleeves. Pants are way to big though. Just the shirts work on the 2t.

Mostly 2T in shirts and 18-24 month pants. LO is 95th percentile for weight and 50th for height, so he's a little chunk with a big belly. buying clothes is a bit of a guessing game.
