Large Toy Storage

Anyone have a solution for large toy storage?  Aiden has a ton of large toys: 3 ride ins, walker, ball popper, train, tool bench, and so on.  We have a toy box but that's for the smaller things.  When we have company over at night I like it to appear to be a adult space and not a playroom.  I've looked into wall systems from pottery barn, t I'm not impressed with the quality.  I've also thought about doing a built in which would be beautiful, but $6,000 and this isn't our forever home.  Anyone find anything?

Re: Large Toy Storage

  • We just bought this great vintage trunk. It has a lot of character and it very deep. It easily holds several of her large toys ball popper, leap frog table, riding toy and it doubles as a bench.

  • We got something similar to RNmama except ours is 9 cubes, 3x3. I have 4 fabric bins that fit in for the smaller toys. Eventually I will get at least 2 more bins but we don't need them right now. We set it up in a corner alcove made by our sofas and the walls. That way, she has a little space that is hers. If I need to clean up bigger things like her push toy or activity table, I can just stick them over by it and its all out of the way.

Yes!  This is exactly what I want!!!!  Where did you end up finding it?  This sounds very much like our style Restoration Hardware/Pottery barn esc.  I just don't want to pay their prices for it.  Haha

  • How crafty are you or DH?  You could do a modified version of something like this:

    https://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/11/from-billys-to-built-ins/" target="_blank" title="https://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/11/from-billys-to-built-ins/">https://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/11/from-billys-to-built-ins/

They turned four of these ($69.99 each - they use 4):

Into this (using $65 of molding and trim): Total cost was around $400.

  • This is so the look I'm going for Kristin, but closed storage for the bottom half. But DH is more the the hiring type, but fortunately he knows it.

  • H is going to have his friend - a professional cabinet maker - help him make a toy chest with lid for DS #2.  I found a great one online but the dimensions aren't what I want/need so he is tweaking it and doing different wood and will use an oil to protect the wood instead of painting it.  It will double as a bench seat but will likely go into DS's closet like our older son's toy chest is.

Hmm....might be worth a quote from a carpenter!  I can't imagine they would charge a lot to install some trim and molding.  They might even be able to do some simple doors for you (what's a couple of hinges, some latches?? Wink)

  • Brownma is check Craig's list. Search for steamer trunk as well and see what you find. Ours is in really good shape but still has a ton of character. I'll try and take a picture to post tomorrow. It's worth shopping around and waiting for the right piece.

  • We have a fairly large living room, so we moved our couch up a couple of feet off the wall, and use the area behind the couch as Lucia's area. Right up against the back of the couch we have long shelves, which we use for bins, books, her bead maze etc. Things like her music table are just out against the back wall. She can get to things, but our living room looks like grownup space.
