The pedi said Nate most likely has asthma (DH and I both do, as well as extended family.) When they are little they call it "reactive airway" instead of asthma. We took him in because his chest was collapsing in when he breathed and he was wheezing and breathing really rapidly. It took four or five days on a nebulizer and some steroids to stabilize it. He's had a few "attacks" since then, but nothing so dramatic. If he starts to wheeze, usually brought on by a virus, then we just drag out the nebulizer and meds right off the bat. Edit: I think that was at about 19 months or so old.
I don't think they will actually "diagnose" asthma until LOs are 5 or 6 years old, until then its reactive airway like pp said. If parents have a history of asthma then likelihood of LO having it is fairly high.
A sees an allergist yearly. Around 9ish months he broke out randomly in hives and had raspy breathing, not wheezing or retractions, but just sounded kinda "off". he had had some minor eczema for a few months prior but we switched around soaps/lotions and it wasn't a major issue. Turns out he has an allergy to dogs/cats via scratch test (not surprising, DH is allergic to cats, and there are several dog breeds that my allergies get hiked up with). DH doesn't have asthma, but I had it pretty bad and was on allergy shots for a couple years so A sees allergist for yearly scratch tests. We are curious with his test this year if he will react more to pollens/grasses etc since those were always my triggers. When he was tested initially he hadn't had much "outdoor" time so hadn't had the exposure. We've been sick too much this winter for him to be tested yet (he's been on multiple rounds of antibiotics), its scheduled for next month. We have an SVN, but we haven't needed it yet. Signs our doctor told us to watch was the retractions or wheezing and he hasn't had that develop yet, even when he's had colds thank goodness. Oh....he's on singulair though too to help keep his allergies in check so maybe thats why we've not needed the SVN.
Does D have any colds or upper resp infection right now? A and J both do, and have for the last month different viruses and both cough quite a bit and it's always been worse at night. A we use the vicks baby on his chest and J (4 months) gets it on his feet at night (makes me feel better I don't know if it does anything magical) and both have humidifiers running all night. J will cough a bit after meds, but that's usually if he fought or didn't suck down the medication right away (he doesn't like one of our tylenol flavors) so I think he tries to aspirate instead of gulping it down and he coughs a little with it.

Did he cough all the time? Mostly at night? Dunk does cough a lot. Mostly when taking his meds. Strange.
