VBAC hospitals

Anyone know if St. Joe's is doing VBACs yet? When I was pg with dd (2011) I was told they were slowly lifting their ban. Has this happened yet? Alternatively, where have you had a good VBAC experience in the TC area (we're in STP)?

Re: VBAC hospitals

  • As of a few months ago they were not doing VBACs.  I called them and they said they would be soon... I think it's smoke and mirrors, and they have no interest in messing with their low c-section rate by allowing VBACs.

I had a tremendous experience with a VBAC at St. Johns.  I transferred to the Generations clinic, which has a phenomenal VBAC rate.  I nearly ended up with a repeat C-section, so close that they called the OB in (dr france).  Most OBs, at that point, would have given me a c-section regardless.  Instead she labored with me for a while and I ended up as a VBAC. So I would recommend the Generations clinic and St. Johns.  The combo was wonderful for me.

  • I don't know where you are, but I had a wonderful VBAC at Methodist.  I saw the Park Nicollet midwives and they were great.  Very high VBAC rate.

I had a very long labor and pushing stage and everyone at Methodist, from the midwives to the nurses were all so patient with me.  I love that they also have telemetry monitors, so I could walk around while laboring.

I would recommend taking the VBAC workshop at Blooma if you want to know more about VBACs in the cities.  They go over all the hospitals and their policies and are a great resource.  They have one every once in a while, it's about $25 to enroll, I think.

  • Had a vbac at Johns. Nurses were great. Doc on call another story. Couldn't get a hold of him so no epi for me. He didn't even make it to the birth. I delivered vbac with no dr! Long story short great nursing staff, don't believe your dr if they promise they'll deliver if not on call. Still a little bitter, ha ha;)
  • If you are looking for a hospital VBAC, Dr. Hartung in Hudson is the best doctor in the twin cities for delivering vbacs.  He has the highest rate out of anyone.  He is one of the top 3 vbac doctors in the country.  I am having a vbac at home, but he is my back up in case something were to risk me out of homebirth (which I hope won't happen!).  He is amazing!  He is the doctor that iCAN Twin Cities recommends to all vbac moms!

    And yes, this.

Check out the VBAC board here, too.  Lots of good advice and awesome ladies.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'm not sure what we'll end up doing. I actually had a great VBAC experience with my daughter at HCMC with the midwives. I'm just not into the prenatal care this time around and am sick of the drive for appts. My hubs is reluctant to switch because we had such a great birth experience before. And yes the Blooma VBAC workshop is fantastic! I recommend it to everyone I know who's had a c-section.

  • Just in case anyone is interested, here are the most recent c-section rates by hospital for Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Hudson hospital is the lowest at 15%.  There are a couple small town hospitals that have low rates, but have very few births and are not in the twin cities area.

  • I just wanted to give another recommendation for Dr Hartung out in Hudson.  I had a completely intervention free, water birth VBAC with him and could have been more pleased with the care I received.  I think he is the only provider in the area who can get you a waterbirth in a hospital if you are a VBAC.
  • I VBACed at St. John's.  The nurses were great.  I used Partners OB/GYN, which the whole clinic is very VBAC friendly.

  • I work at Woodwinds and we do TOLACs (the official name for VBACs) as it is a trial of labor after cesarean...vbac is once you have ACTUALLY delivered vaginally after cesarean.  Both WW and John's do TOLACs because they have in-house (in hospital) anesthesiologists and OB/GYNs.  Joe's does not do TOLACs because they do not have an in-house MD 24 hours a day and that is required (along with an anesthesiologist) by ACOG to qualify a hospital for TOLACs.
