My son hates oatmeal, suggestions?

He will be 5 months in about a week. We have tried giving him oatmeal mixed with breastmilk on and off for about 3 weeks. We have tried different consistencies. We went with oatmeal because it's supposed to be the least likely to get him backed up (he doesn't poop everyday). Once he did he eat it. But he just makes terrible faces like I'm feeding him something awful. When we eat or drink around him he reaches for our cups and spoons and even opens his mouth so we figure he is ready to eat but then he just won't eat. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • It takes time for them to get used to eating with a spoon. I would just keep trying. He also just may not be ready yet.

  • Ds doesn't like cereal, but he loves him some fruits and veggies. He was doing the same thing for us so i figured he wasn't ready turns out he just isn't want the cereal.

  • DD doesn't really like oatmeal either. She will eat it but doesn't eat much or enjoy it. She loves veggies! She likes fruits but not apples. We still offer oatmeal twice a day but we make smaller than recommended because usually it just gets thrown out. We're hoping once we try bananas if they go well we will start buying the oatmeal fruit mix to see if that goes over better. Gerber has a banana oatmeal box.

I would say just get trying what he doesn't like now might be different in a few weeks. Or at least that's what we were told when it comes to fruits and veggies.

  • We bought DD organic oatmeal with banana. We just started it today, but she really likes it. Are you using a weaning spoon? We bought Tommee Tippee weaning spoons. They're really rubbery and flexible, and she did great with it. Good luck!

  • It's probably a combination of him being very young and also not liking it. I'd take a break for a few weeks. You could even skip the oatmeal and go for veggies/fruit.
  • I mix dd's oatmeal with fruit purees.

  • I agree with skipping it and moving on to something else. Maybe try reintroducing in a few weeks.

  • We recently started DD on some squash, for similar reasons as you mentioned like opening her mouth and reaching for our food. We tried rice cereal first, which she liked but seemed to make her gassy. She hasn't had any problems with the squash though, so I may try her on some sweet potato later this week. If your LO doesn't like the cereal and tends to get constipated, I'd try a veggie.
  • One of my books (I forget which--anyone help me out?) mentions that just because they reach for spoons/grown ups' food/etc and even try to put it in their own mouths doesn't necessarily mean they're ready to eat.  They are always exploring and that's one more thing to explore!  So I wouldn't pressure yourself, you know?  I tend to give anything new with DD a week--and if it's not taking, I give it a rest. I agree with above--you can go for trying fruits/veggies, or taking a break, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

  • I think we will take a break, thanks ladies!

  • Reaching for colorful food doesn't mean they are ready to have a spoon with cereal on it forced into their mouths.

If he doesn't like it, try it again in a few weeks. Or skip it altogether.

I agree. According to the book Baby Led Weaning, that's a misconception about babies being ready for solids. They are just becoming more aware, so it doesn't necessarily mean he's ready.
  • That makes sense.

  • It could be that he just doesn't like it. DS1 didn't like everything we gave him. Try something else next time like squash.
