Ending cosleeping question

Hi all - I'm not a frequent poster but I wanted to ask for some advice.  My DD is almost 18 months old.  She cosleeps with us.  It started around 6-7 months - she would wake up for a night feeding and we'd keep her in bed with us (I nursed for 13 months).  Through this fall - she would end up in our bed around 3/4AM.  Now, she starts out in our bed.  Also, she falls asleep cuddling me in our bed and I put her in her crib once she's asleep.  When she wakes up from her crib, she screams bloody murder (she is not one to just hang out and "talk" and play in her crib).

So, I want to slowly get her sleeping in her crib and, fall asleep on her own.  Now, to get her to sleep, I don't rock or sing, I just sit next to her, she sucks her fingers and settles in and falls asleep.

I am anti-CIO, especially because I know she can't really handle it.

So do you guys have any advice to get her sleeping at least most of the night in her crib and/or falling asleep on her own without CIO?

  • Have you thought about putting her in a big girl bed (twin or full size) with rails instead of a crib?  Honestly that was what finally got my DD out of our bed for good, and she slept SOOO much better once she got into a full size bed.

  • I agree, but before you go purchasing a new bed, simply take her crib mattress out of the crib and lay it on the floor and see how that works, as a test run.
  • My DD is almost the same age, and we had the same issues with our crib -- we could sometimes get her down for the start of the night, but she would wake an hour later screaming and I could never get her back down in the crib.  We got her a toddler bed a couple weeks ago, and she is much happier.  It's currently next to our bed so that when she wakes, I can comfort her or lay next to her in the toddler bed, and then get out when she is asleep again.  Her sleeping stretches are getting longer, and she seems to be enjoying having her own space.  She used to love being in our bed, but I notice lately she kicks her legs like she is cramped -- I think she is starting to prefer her own bed.  For us the toddler bed worked well because she is still pretty small (so her crib mattress is a good size for her), and it's low enough that she can get in and out on her own (not that she gets out at night, but she likes to climb on her bed with a book).  Also I feel comfortable with the little side rails even though she's not a roller -- when she wakes up, she just sits up.  Good luck!!
