Pregnant after 35

Fever

Hi ladies.  Anyone have a fever during pregnancy?  I've been sick since Wednesday (congestion, cough) but now fever, until now.  It isn't high, around 100, but I'm seeing conflicting information on the web vs. information on my OB's website.  OB says that if it gets above 102 to call.  Everything else I've read says 100.4 or more.  I took 1 extra strength Tylenol and am drinking lots of water.  I'm just a little freaked out because my temps tend to run high once they get started. To make things worse, my DH and my DS are both sick as well.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Fever

  • What's your normal temp run? (I ask because I run low, for example, so a temp of 100 is more of a temp for me than it would be for someone who is naturally at 98.6.) The importance of "above 102" is because that is the point where a temp stops being helpful in killing bacteria/viruses and starts being damaging to the human body.

If the Tylenol doesn't work, you can try putting some ice packs in your armpits and/or your groin (not your vajayjay, but the crease where your leg meets your hip) for about 20 minutes to bring your body temp down.

But if you're around 100, that's actually your body's defense to fight off the bug it's got without needing antibiotics... so it may be good to just let your body do its natural thing and keep monitoring your temp in case it gets above 102.

  • Yes, I have, a few times if I count my last pregnancy as well as this one.  It never ran very high though.  My doctor has never been very concerned about the reading on the thermometer as much as what bug is causing it.  i.e. if it's the flu and you're pregnant, you can get major complications because your immune system is tamped down.  On the other hand, the common cold is not likely to cause you any long term problems even if you do run a fever (and even though a cold lasts 2-3 times as long when you're pregnant!).

100.4 is the technical definition of a fever (you will become an expert on this once you have the baby, especially if they go to daycare LOL).  I've never heard it used in terms of pregnant women though, just babies and young children. For example, my daughter's daycare will send anyone home who has a temp of 100.4 or higher.

  • Thanks ladies.  Temp never got about 100 last night.  I took Tylenol and drank LOTS of water.  I'm pretty sure this isn't the flu because it is all in my head and I'm not having the aches and pains, just A LOT of congestion and stuffiness.  If it doesn't improve today or tomorrow I might call my doc. to get some advice.  Hot steam showers and a humidifier works a little, but seriously, this stinks!

  • I haven't even taken my temperature since I got pregnant since I'm no longer charting. LOL

Chronic congestion and also nose bleeds are common in pregnancy. I have it all the time, so I basically sleep with Vick's VapoRub under my nostrils every night. It helps a lot...
