cleaning LO's toys - what's your strategy?

I am needy tonight, two posts:)  How do you clean your LO's toys?  Here's what I am doing...anything else you would suggest, or, any issues with what I am doing?

  • "hard" toys with no electronics or fabric - dishwasher
  • fabric toys - laundry unless it has electronics
  • "hard" toys too big for the dishwasher - lysol or clorox wipes
  • blankets, sheets, carseat fabric, etc. - laundry

I wash or wipe everything once a week, unless something gets really nasty of course clean as needed.

The one I am worried about is Lysol wipes...do I need to use something less harsh? Also, what about fabric toys with electronics or too large that can't go in the laundry...how do you clean these?

  • I did hard toys in the dishwasher once after hosting a play date.

Sheets once a week on laundry day.

We got hand-me-downs (jumper, walker, leap frog activity table, activity mat, etc) from my sister and we put what we could in the washer and scrubed down the rest with Lysol wipes.

Ive wiped down some toys as needed, but I haven't really thought about washing the toys regularly/once a week. I'm interested to see what others say.

  • I'm sure there are safer products for cleaning. My baby nurse told me to wash what I could mostly in hot water and mild baby soap.
Occasionally you can disinfect large toys in a water and bleach soak, Google instructions. I've fallen victim to the Clorox wipes but am sure there's a healthier option available at organic stores.
  • I wouldn't use Clorox wipes, too strong of chemicals for LO. Normal household cleaning I use 7th gen or mrs Meyers wipes. As far as his toys go, I've never really washed them yet. Just his own germs on most of them, and just drool mostly.
  • You can try a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. I don't trust the chemical residue left by the dishwasher and Lysol wipes.

  • I rarely clean dd's toys.  If one happens to fall somewhere gross (near the toilet for example) then it gets washed in hot soapy water.  Cleaning things too frequently and with harsh chemicals can have neg effects.

  • I use seventh generation wipes. You can find them at Target.
  • I was the ones I can with dawn dish soap and hot water. The ones that can go in the wash machine go in, again as needed. His bigger toys jumperoo, exersaucer, electronic ones, get a wipe down with Fantastic and then a spray of Lysol if they have been in LOs mouth ALOT! I just did this after his recent cold, and he seems fine.

If you want to try "less harsh" or "greener" products I am sure you can just Google it an a hundred items will populate. i am not concerned with the products that I am using with DS.
