Head injury causing fever??

My 3.5 year old tripped and fell this morning and got a bump on his head. 4 hours later he's got a low grade fever. Didn't want to eat lunch. Kinda acting tired but still acting like himself.
I called the doctor and she said the fall and fever are unrelated unless he lost consciousness or fell from a higher level, however I keep reading online that head injury with fever needs immediate ER attention.
Anyone's toddler get a fever after a fall it is it just coincidence?

Re: Head injury causing fever??

  • Hm, I never had this happen but if you are concerned I think it warrants an ER trip. You would definitely rather be safe than sorry.

  • I suppose it could be coincidence.  Have you retaken the temp lately?  Maybe the crying and such could have caused a low-grade for a while?

Has he been around anyone sick lately?

That's a tough one if your dr is saying it's not a problem.  You could always take to the hospital, but not sure what they can do either.  Did he vomit??

  • No. No vomit. He had a bowel movement and ate a big lunch and is napping now. He seems 'normal' now, but it could just be the Motrin. Will check temp again later.
Funny thing is we took him to the ER last night for another issue leg pain..was Xray'd and sent home with diagnosis of growing pains. Didn't want to get the 'you're here again?' look LOL

This would make think maybe he picked something up in the ER causing the fever. Keep an eye on him after nap time. Any vomiting, decrease in activity/appetite,changes in walking, lethargy, just not being himself Id give the pediatrician a call back.

  • Yeah growing pains suck.   We've been woken up countless times w those.  I highly rec Advil for those pains.
